【不离】法王如意宝：当今时代，人人心里都住有一个恶魔

昔日，大多数人品行高尚，极少欺骗他人，

In the past, most people were of noble character and rarely cheated others.

一旦做错了事，就会马上感到羞愧，并立即忏悔。

As soon as they did something wrong, they immediately felt ashamed and instantly repented.

他们大都非常讲求信誉，为了恪守誓言，即使付出宝贵的生命也在所不惜。

Most of them took great care to guard their reputations and were willing to sacrifice their precious lives to honor their vows.

然而，如今不少人为了达到种种个人目的，所作所为不择手段，

Yet nowadays, many people use all sorts of crooked means to achieve their personal goals.

甚至为了一点蝇头小利，就不惜背叛亲人、践踏法律。

Sometimes for the most insignificant gain, they are willing to betray their family and flout the law.

古人对待给予自己关心和帮助的人，大多心存感激、牢牢铭记。

The ancients usually harbored gratitude to those who had given them care and help, and always remembered them steadfastly.

等到因缘成熟之际，不论达官显贵，还是山野村夫，都懂得“滴水之恩，涌泉相报”。

When the causes and conditions were ripe, noble aristocrats and simple country folk alike knew to “repay the kindness of a drop of water with a fountain.”

可是，今人非但不能如此，反倒常常恩将仇报。

Today, however, not only are people unable to behave in this way, but they even return kindness with animosity.

古人愿意听取别人的不同意见，接受他人的忠告。

The ancients were amenable to others’ different opinions and accepted sincere advice.

今人却对这些逆耳忠言无法容忍，

People today, however, cannot tolerate any harsh criticism, even if sincerely offered,

只愿听到一片赞美之声。

but are only prepared to hear the sounds of praise.

许多人一旦受到恭维，便如饮甘露，欣欣然忘乎所以，

For many people, being flattered is like tasting ambrosia, and they float on clouds of pride.

如此一来，他们对自己与周围环境的认识，就会离真相越来越远。

As a result, their awareness of themselves and their surroundings becomes further distanced from reality.

以往人们相互见面时，态度温和、谦逊，言语礼貌周到。

In the past, when people met, they were mild-mannered, humble, polite, and considerate in their language.

但现如今的人，结交人多半出于功利的目的，

Yet people now mostly mingle out of self-interest.

即使本无仇怨，

Even if there is no animosity at the beginning,

相处不久也会产生莫名的隔阂与不快，继而生起强烈的嗔心。

not long after they meet, inexplicable conflicts and displeasure arise, followed by fierce anger.

究其原因，就是各自的利益冲突在作祟。

The root cause of this trouble is that people’s personal interests are at odds.

进一步讲，不仅是人与人之间，

Furthermore, it is not only between individuals that these difficulties occur.

以往部落与部落、国家与国家之间也能和睦相处。

In the past, there was harmony between tribes and between countries,

如今的情形却恰恰相反：

but it is exactly the opposite now.

世界上很多国家、地区都在爆发冲突，到处战火纷飞。

Many countries and regions in the world have erupted into conflict, and the flames of war rage everywhere.

所谓的和平年代，也并不和平。

So-called peacetime is not so peaceful after all.

与此相应，社会上大多数人在交往中，都是互相戒备、互相算计，

Echoing this, in society, most people are wary in their interactions, and they scheme against one another.

整个人群中，到处弥漫着勾心斗角的气息。

The entire community is pervaded by an atmosphere of open and covert strife.

所有这些世间乱象，无不应验了莲花生大士的授记：

All these signs of chaos in the world have come to fulfill Master Padmasambhava’s prophecy:

在当今时代，男女老少的心中，都藏有一个恶魔。

During the Dharma age of degeneration, a demon resides in the minds of all men and women,old and young.

这并不是环境改变造成的，而是众生的行为趋向恶劣所致。

This is not caused by changes in the environment but by living beings’ actions that tend toward the heinous.
