Do not blindly follow the herd to snatch wealth
Many people toil and labor all their lives, yet end up amassing nothing but unbearable suffering.
This outcome is caused by their failure to ponder the most critical issue in life.
They have not questioned: Do the things I deem so important have any real value at all?
People pursue things they regard as important; but more often than not, they do it blindly.
A parable, “Plop, Plop!” describes this situation well:
One morning, three rabbits were happily running after butterflies by the lake.
All of a sudden they heard a loud noise “Plop!” that scared them.
Before realizing what was going on, they heard another loud “Plop!”
Terrified, the rabbits turned and started to run.
On their way they met a fox.
Upon hearing the rabbits saying, “Plop! The Plop is coming,” the fox became terrified and joined the fleeing rabbits.
They in turn ran into bears, monkeys, hippos, tigers, and elephants, who all became panicked and followed suit.
In the end, almost all the animals in the forest were running like maniacs.
This massive exodus shocked a frog, who asked, “What on earth is the matter?”
All the animals started talking at once, saying, “Plop! the Plop is coming! It’s very scary; it has three heads, eight legs, and... ”
The frog asked, “Who has seen the Plop?”
The elephants pointed to the hippos, the hippos pointed to the monkeys, and finally the animals pointed to the rabbits.
But none had actually seen the Plop in person.
They decided to turn back to take a look.
Quietly, they arrived at the lakeside and heard the loud “Plop!” once again.
Looking around carefully, they realized that it was the sound of a papaya falling from a tree into the lake.
The animals laughed despite themselves.
It is also a familiar scene on the African prairie.
When an animal starts to run, scores of other animals will mindlessly follow it, running wildly as well.
The ironic thing is that in our society today many people, who pride themselves as having higher intelligence than animals,
will still thoughtlessly follow others to covet money and possessions.
We should really search our hearts and think it over,
“Do I have to act this way? If someone else buys a big house, must I get one too? If others get fancy cars, do I need one also?”
With calm analysis, a wise person will come to see the fault of harboring a desire above one’s own means.
Overtaken by it, a person is likely to commit misdeeds, or harm one’s own body in order to amass money.
All kinds of unspeakable agonies inevitably pile up.
Why would one ask for such troubles?
Living a joyful and peaceful life starts from cultivating the inner self,
rather than blindly trying to join the league of others.
Otherwise, you will never experience true contentment, whether you achieve your personal goals or not, because desire is a bottomless pit.
