科学还是佛教重要?

Which is more important, science or Buddhism?


问:佛教与科学之间关系是怎样的?
Question: What is the relationship between Buddhism and science?


将来社会发展的过程中,科学重要还是佛教重要?
As society is progressing into the future, is science or Buddhism more important?
堪布答:佛教,如今被称为内在的科学。
Khenpo: Nowadays, Buddhism is being recognized as an inner science.


像著名的心理学家荣格,在研究多年心理学之后,接触了藏传佛教的《西藏度亡经》,发现它对自己的心灵有极大帮助,
The renowned psychologist, Carl Jung, after many years of research on human psychology, still credited the Tibetan Book of the Dead for helping him great­ly in his spiritual cultivation.


于是认定佛教是一种心灵科学,并对此给予极高的评价。
He acknowledged Buddhism as a science of the mind and praised it highly.


同样,科学家爱因斯坦也认为:“如果有一个能应付现代科学需求,又能与科学相依共存的宗教,那必定是佛教。”
In the same vein, Einstein said, “Buddhism covers both the natural and the spiritual... Buddhism is the only religion able to cope with modern scientific needs.”


佛教,或者说佛法,实际上是佛陀照见万法真相之后,抉择并加以宣扬的。
Buddhism, or the Buddhadharma, is what the Buddha chose to teach after he had realized the reality of all phenomena.


一般而言,“法”有十种涵义,如古籍中云:“法乃所知道,涅槃及意境,福德寿典籍,未来定境规。”
In general, there are ten meanings of “dharma” as stated in the ancient classic, “Dharma is an object of knowledge, the path, nirvana, a mental object, merit, life, teachings of the Buddha, what is subject to age or change, rules, and spiritual traditions.”


而佛法中的“法”,则是指佛法的精要,
Specifically, “Dharma” in Buddhism refers to its quintessential quality.


正如佛经所言:“诸恶莫作,诸善奉行,自净其意,是诸佛教。”
The scripture says, “Abandon wrongdoing; practice virtue well; subdue your mind: This is the Buddha’s teaching.”


也就是说,提倡不造恶业、行持善法,这即是佛教的本意。
In other words, Buddhism basically advocates the abandonment of non-virtue and the practice of virtue.


如今的科学,对于外在的物质,可以说有诸多观察,然而对于内心世界,却是一筹莫展,只能无奈地在门外徘徊。
Modern science has done extensive investigations on the external mate­rial world, but in regard to the inner world of the mind, scientists are at a loss and don’t have a clue how to pry open this door.


而佛教的教义,则淋漓尽致地揭示了这方面的真相。
Buddhist tenets, how­ever, reveal the truth of the mind in a comprehensive and incisive way.


因此,著名院士朱清时认为,佛教是当之无愧的心灵科学。
It’s no wonder that Zhu Qingshi, a distinguished academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, says that Buddhism fully deserves to be called the sci­ence of the mind.


所谓的“科学”,其实除了社会科学、自然科学以外,还有一种叫心灵科学,或心智科学。
In the science arena, besides social science and natural science, there is a branch called science of the mind or science of the internal spirit.


在我看来,人类只要生存于世,并想不断发展,心灵科学就不可或缺。
In my opinion, the science of the mind is indispensable as long as humans want to survive in the world and continue to progress.


这种内在的科学,与外在的发展只会相辅相成,而绝不会成为它的绊脚石。
Such an inner science will never impede outer advancement; instead, they will support each other and work synergistically.
倘若没有心灵科学,随着物质生活的不断提升,人们的内心只会越来越空虚、苍白。
Without understanding how the mind works, the more materialistic we become, the more our hearts will feel unfilled.


像如今美国和汉地的很多富翁,纵然拥有数亿家产,却感觉不到丝毫快乐,始终被痛苦的大山压得喘不过气来。
For instance, many wealthy people in the United States or China, despite having hundreds of millions of dollars in assets, are utterly bereft of happiness and wilt under mounting pressures.


可见,外在的物质再怎么富足,也无法带来内心的安乐。
It’s clear that outer possessions, no matter how extravagant, can never bring about inner joy.


这些人不像我们藏族,基本都相信前后世存在,也有许多对治痛苦的调心方法。对他们而言,假如今生根本不快乐,那一切的发展都没有了意义。
Unlike Tibetans who basically believe in the existence of past and future lives and know how to deal with suffering, most worldly people care only about happiness in this lifetime, and when they fail to achieve this, their life feels meaningless.


对没有信仰的人来说,人生往往缺乏归宿感,随着社会的发展,内心的欲望会越来越大,
To those without any religious faith, life often lacks a sense of belonging. Their desires get inflated as society continues to develop.


有了一套房子,还想要一套;有了一辆车子,还想要一辆……如此,一辈子都沦为金钱的奴隶,许多现象看起来令人非常伤感。
Owning one house leads to the desire for another one. Having one car brings the urge to get the next, and so on, turning them into money slaves throughout their life. Aren’t such situations utterly pathetic!


所以,对这些人来讲,我觉得,心灵科学显得尤为重要。
Thus, I think studying the mind is especially crucial for people in the world today.

人死如灯灭吗?

Does a man die the way a lamp is extinguished?



问:佛教对生死持什么样的观点?
Question: What is the Buddhist view on life and death?



堪布答:佛教对待生死,跟世间人完全不同。
Khenpo: The Buddhist view on life and death is completely different from the mundane view.


世间人一般认为,一个人的出生,如同大地上长蘑菇一样,突然就冒出来了;一个人的死亡,如同灰尘被风吹走了一样,说没有就没有了。
People usually think a person gets born just like mushrooms popping out from the soil, and a person dies just like dust being blown by the wind, leaving no trace behind.
但事实上,每个人并不是只有这一世,无始以来,我们在生死中流转了无数世,只不过现在不记得了而已。
But in fact, every being does not live for only one lifetime. From time without beginning, we have been cycling through life and death for countless rounds. It’s just that we can’t remember.


而且就算我们这一世死了,生命也一直会延续下去,并不会以此而中断。
If we die now, that’s not the end; life will continue.


佛教中为什么劝人要多做善事?
Why does Buddhism strongly promote doing virtuous deeds?


就是因为如果你没有做善事,经常杀生造恶业,也许今生中果报没有现前,但是在来世,它一定会成熟在你的身上。
It is be­cause if you perform harmful actions like taking life or committing other misdeeds, their effects will definitely ripen in you in your future lives, if not in this one.


一切苦乐皆自作自受,故望大家不可不慎!
All happiness and suffering is the result of one’s own actions, it pays to be prudent!
