为什么有些人身上的倒霉事总是一件接着一件？
祸不单行很正常
Commonly, it never rains but it pours
一个人在众多业力的激发下，种种痛苦层出不穷，
Under the influence of multiple karmic factors, we experience numerous sufferings.
从苦中又产生苦，或者苦上又加苦，
For instance, before one suffering is over, it intensifies or leads to another.
这就是“苦苦”，也是世人常说的“祸不单行”。
This is called ”suffering upon suffering,” a situation often described in the world as “it never rains but it pours.”
有些人在别人看来很倒霉，
Some people seem especially unlucky in the eyes of others.
前面的痛苦还未烟消云散，后面的打击又接踵而来，可谓一波未平，一波又起。
Hardly has one trouble subsided when another arises, and they are constantly subjected to waves of misfortune.
《贤愚经》中的微妙比丘尼，在家时痛苦就屡屡发生在她身上，各种经历更是不可思议：
As described in The Sutra of the Wise and the Foolish, a nun named Utpala suffered a plethora of bitter fates in her life.
一次，她因有孕在身，要和丈夫、儿子回娘家生产。
Once, when she became pregnant, she, her husband, and their son set out to her parents’ house to have the baby there.
途中在一大树下过夜，半夜时她突然临盆，
On the way her pains came. She lay down beneath a tree and gave birth at midnight,
结果引来毒蛇，咬死了她的丈夫。
but the delivery attracted a poisonous snake that bit her husband.
第二天，她发现后悲痛欲绝，
At dawn she found her husband dead and she was grief-stricken.
无奈之下，只好肩上担着大儿子，怀里抱着小儿子涕泣着上路。
Helpless and weeping, she could only strap the older child to her back while carrying the newborn next to her breast as she continued onward.
不料大儿子被河水冲走，小儿子又被狼吃掉，
Unexpectedly, her older child drowned in the rapids of a river, and her baby was devoured by fierce wolves.
最后遇到一婆罗门还告诉她：“你父母的房子近日起火，一家人全被烧死了！”……
Later, she met a Brahmin who told her that her parents’ house had caught on fire and everyone in it was burned to death!
对我们而言，虽不一定像她那样有如此多的悲惨遭遇，
We may not encounter as many disasters as she did,
但平时还是能感受到不少。
but we all have our own share of agonies.
比如，有人刚刚失业，又生一场大病卧床不起；
For example, a person got laid off and then became bedridden from a serious illness;
孩子不幸去世，没两年妻子又查出癌症晚期；
someone’s child died and in less than two years, his wife was diagnosed with a late-stage cancer;
今天工作不顺，别人又说自己坏话，同时还丢了最宝贵的东西……
we had a bad day at work, others spoke ill of us, and we lost a most valuable belonging...

对此，隋朝慧远大师在《维摩义记》中形象地解释为：
Master Hui Yuan of Sui Dynasty in Commentaries on Vimalakirti Sutra depicted it as,
“从苦生苦，故名苦苦。”
“One suffering gives rise to another, and thus it is called suffering upon suffering.”
不过，佛陀认为，世间之苦本就如此。
However, the Buddha sees all these sufferings as the true face of the mundane world.
无论我们生于什么地方，都会一个痛苦接着一个痛苦，这个痛苦还没消失，那个痛苦又出现了，
Wherever we are born, suffering is bound to strike us one after the other;
连一刹那安安稳稳、快快乐乐的机会也没有。
there is not a single moment of happiness and peacefulness.
了知这一点，我们就会心里有数，面对起来也比较容易。
Realizing this point, we can be better prepared mentally and, thus, can handle various situations with relative ease.
