The sky is vast, but is dwarfed by an avaricious mind
A person with insatiable greediness will always have a poverty mentality and can never experience true happiness, irrespective of the ample wealth he or she might already have.
Unless the mind is tamed, no amount of material goods will bring true contentment to this kind of person.
In many instances, covetous people will not only fail to get what they want, but will also lose what they already have.
Once upon a time, a woman known as Wangpo (Granny Wang) made a living by brewing wine.
A certain Taoist priest often stopped by her place for drinks, which, over time, amounted to a hundred jugs of wine. But he had never paid any money,
nor had Wangpo asked for it.
One day the Taoist priest said, “I have consumed so much of your wine but have never paid you.
Why not let me dig a well for you in lieu of my dues?”
No sooner had he spoken than a well appeared in her yard, and what was drawn from the well was a fine wine.
From then on, Wangpo no longer needed to brew wine but could fetch it right from the well.
Some time later, the Taoist priest came back and asked Wangpo how she liked the wine.
Wangpo complained, “No doubt the wine is excellent, but regrettably, I no longer have leftover grain from brewing to feed my pigs.”
The priest burst into laughter and wrote a verse on the wall,
“The sky is vast, but is dwarfed by an insatiable mind.
The well produces wine, but complaining about not having leftover grain dries it up.”
Afterward, the well stopped producing wine.
A person with insatiable greediness will always have a poverty mentality and can never experience true happiness, irrespective of the ample wealth he or she might already have.
Unless the mind is tamed, no amount of material goods will bring true contentment to this kind of person.
People with these tenacious attachments in life will remain so even during the last minutes before death.
An example is Yan Jiansheng in The Scholars (Rulin Waishi), who at his deathbed somehow held onto his last breath and kept gesturing with his two fingers.
His first nephew asked him if he was expecting two more relatives to see him off, but he shook his head.
A younger nephew asked if he had more to say about two stockpiles of silver, but he responded the same way.
At last, his mistress said, “My lord, I know exactly what you are thinking.
You are worrying about the two wicks burning in the oil lamp; I’ll remove one of the wicks.” And that’s what she did.
It was only then that Yan Jiansheng nodded, dropped his hand, and breathed his last.
Even on the verge of dying, Yan Jiansheng still could not let go of a tiny amount of oil.
Our modern society is rife with people like him,
who cannot close their eyes when dying because of their clinging to possessions, bank savings, houses or cars, and more.
Although money can bring some temporary happiness, it cannot eradicate suffering at its root.
Some people live a very simple lifestyle with humble clothing and food, yet they are rewarded with a sense of ease and freedom that transcends material cravings.
Hence, inner wisdom and contentment far surpass any outward wealth.
Why is Buddhism also called a study of “inner science?”
It is because it pertains to the development of inner wisdom, rather than the study of outer phenomena that can only solve part of our problems.
The Dharma has solutions for all of the mind’s afflictions. When our minds are trained, the world will appear more wonderful.
