处于贫穷痛苦的时候，别人若对我做过帮助，日后当我财富势力圆满时，也不能忘记他。

If others helped me when I was impoverished or in pain, then later, when my wealth and influence were more satisfactory, I did not forget them.

否则，即使自己的名声、地位再高，实际上也是一个卑劣的小人。

To do otherwise would make me a contemptible, lowly character, no matter how high my reputation or status.

现在有些人就是这样，稍微有一点地位，就把以前的恩人忘得一干二净。

Nowadays some people are like this: As soon as they gain a little status, they erase any memory of their past benefactors.

他把有恩于己的人舍弃，结交上一个势力比较大的，到了一定的时候，他又会故伎重演……

They abandon those who showed them kindness and take up with someone who is more influential, and then later they repeat the cycle again.

所以，跟这种人打交道没有任何意义。

It is utterly pointless to associate with such people.

交友，关键要看对方的品格，如果人格好一点，哪怕他与你关系一般，甚至对你可能还有点偏见，也绝不会做有损你的事情。

When making friends, the key is to see their character. Friends of good character—even though they may not be particularly close to you and may even think ill of you in some ways—would never do anything to harm you.

而如果为了与你交好，甘愿舍弃之前的旧友，那此人就很不可靠，总有一天，他也会这样对待你。

But if people are willing to abandon their old friends just to befriend you, then they are unreliable and will one day treat you the same way.

甚至有些人对自己的上师也是如此，

There are even those who treat their teacher this way.

当他见到一个更有名望的上师，就把原来的上师舍弃了，

When they meet a more renowned teacher, they discard their original teacher.

这种忘恩之人极不稳重。

Such ungrateful people are not very grounded at all.

从前，有三位远道而来的喇嘛向钦则仁波切求法，

A long time ago, three lamas traveled from afar to seek the Dharma from Do Khyentse Yeshe Dorje Rinpoche.

仁波切对他们说：“如果你们舍弃以前所有的上师，我就给你们传法。”

Rinpoche said to them, “If you abandon all of your former teachers, I will teach you.”

当时，有两个喇嘛觉得，他们以前的上师名望低下，而钦则仁波切声名远播，于是就同意了。

At the time, two of the lamas felt that their former teachers were of little fame, whereas Khyentse Rinpoche’s reputation spread far and wide, so they agreed.

但剩下那位喇嘛认为：“钦则仁波切虽是一位非凡的大德，但以前的上师对我恩德深厚，

But the remaining lama thought, “Khyentse Rinpoche may be an extraordinary master, but my former teacher has been profoundly kind to me.

所以，我宁可不求法也不能舍弃上师。”

I would rather forgo this chance to seek the Dharma than abandon my teacher.”

钦则仁波切见状，就对那两位喇嘛说：“你们这样对待以前的上师，以后肯定也会这样对我，

Seeing this, Khyentse Rinpoche said to the first two lamas, “If you treat your former teachers in this manner, you will surely treat me the same way in the future.

所以你俩不是法器，不能听我的法。另外那个喇嘛，则可以留下。”

You two are not worthy Dharma vessels, so you cannot receive my teachings. The other lama can stay.”

后来，那个喇嘛在仁波切面前闻受了许多佛法，证悟了非常殊胜的境界。

Later, that lama received a great many Dharma teachings from Rinpoche and attained sublime states of realization.

他的名字，就叫阿克沃热。

His name is Lama Ösel.
