Cherishing the present beats fantasizing about the future

Most of us cherish spending time with friends and loved ones. But all these warm, joyful occasions will eventually confront the immutable law: Whatever comes together is impermanent and is bound to come apart.

Let us, then, treasure the interconnections we have now, rather than belatedly realize their preciousness when they are gone.

Two days ago, I returned to that place.

When I was a preschool youngster, I used to live in a place with my family that was the winter home of a herdsman.

Through the ensuing years of grade school, middle school, normal school and becoming a monk, I had not been back.

As I walked around the farm with my younger brother, scenes from thirty years ago arose in my mind, each with increasing vividness.

I did not see big changes in this place of my childhood, except that most of the old neighbors were gone.

I spotted a few rocks chiseled with the Mani mantra* that had been my own work of preschool years. Amazingly, the engravings were still distinct, and I picked up a few to bring back with me.

This nostalgic trip to my old home drenched me again with the reality of impermanence.

In another one hundred years, none of us will be around anymore.

Goethe said, To every man, no matter whom he may be, there comes a last happiness and a last day.

Goethe had not studied Buddhism nor been trained in the Mahayana practice on impermanence, yet he realized that no happiness is everlasting.

Life is like an oil lamp flickering in the wind; at every moment it faces the danger of being blown out.

Milan Kundera said, Life is a tree laden with potential.

Nobody is certain what one will encounter in the next moment.

This being the case, shouldnt we treasure the present moments we share together?

In the Tang Dynasty, there was a monk called Du Shun who kept a daily routine of going to work in the field during the day and reciting the Avatamsaka Sutra at the monastery in the evening.

A disciple had come to study with him for more than ten years.

In the beginning, the student had a strong faith, but later he felt that there was nothing special about his teacher, as all he did was farm in the day and read the sutra in the evening.

The student decided he might as well go to Wutai Mountain to pay homage to Bodhisattva Manjushri and request the Bodhisattvas wisdom blessing.

He declared his wish to his teacher, who answered, I dont think its necessary. Just stay here to practice; its no different from meeting Manjushri at Wutai Mountain.

But the student did not see the teachers point and insisted, Master, I have aspired to make a pilgrimage to Wutai Mountain. Please grant me my wish!

Seeing the students firm intent, the master finally nodded.

The student arrived at Wutai Mountain after a long, strenuous journey. There he chanced upon an old man who asked him, Why did you come all the way to Wutai Mountain?

He replied, I came to pay homage to the Bodhisattva Manjushri.

The old man told him, Your very master is the Bodhisattva Manjushri. You neglected to pay homage to him but, instead, chose to travel all the way here. Why did you search far away for something that was right next to you?

Having thus spoken, the old man disappeared.

Awareness suddenly dawned on the student, and he rushed back.

Lamentably, his master had passed away just moments before he arrived back at the monastery.

Cherishing the present is better than fantasizing about the future.

The present moment has so much to offer.

Regrettably, this eludes most people. They continue to search hither and thither all their lives to fulfill their impractical dreams, affording not even a moments break from their long, painful toiling.

People like this are unlikely to find the objects they yearn for even up to their dying hour.

They have been so oblivious that they miss their very opportunity at close range.

† Wutai Mountain is a Buddhist sacred site in Shanxi Province, China, and is reported to be the seat of Bodhisattva Manjushri.
