Infatuation falls short of miracles
The Taj Mahal, the magnificent monument that stands at the heart of India, is regarded as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The story behind it also reveals the law of impermanence that underscores all phenomena.
The Taj Mahal was built by the Indian Emperor, Shah Jahan, in memory of his beloved wife, Arjumand Banu, to whom he bestowed the name “Mumtaz Mahal.”
Banu was said to be an unsurpassable beauty, and at the age of twenty-one she married the third prince of the Mughal Emperor, Prince Khurram.
The couple remained together through life’s ups and downs, including many of the prince’s military campaigns.
Later, after a brutal coup, Price Khurram seized the throne and gave himself the title Shah Jahan, which meant “King of the World.”
But their happy days did not last long. Banu died during childbirth at the age of thirty-nine while accompanying Shah Jahan to a battle in the south.
The emperor was grief-stricken and inconsolable after Banu’s death.
To commemorate his love, he exhausted all of his empire’s resources and wealth to build a mausoleum. It took twenty thousand workers and twenty-two years to complete this immaculate, glittering white Taj Mahal.
Legend even has it that to ensure his wife’s mausoleum would remain unique in the world, he ordered all the craftsmen’s thumbs to be amputated so that the masterpiece could never be replicated.
The emperor planned to build himself a black mausoleum across the bank of the river so that his body would rest opposite his wife’s.
A bridge made of marble—half white and half black—would connect the two mausoleums.
However, soon after the completion of the Taj Mahal, his third son defeated his elder brothers, usurped the throne, and put his father in house arrest at Agra Fort, not too far from the Taj Mahal.
For eight years, Shah Jahan could only look sadly through a tiny window at the reflections of the Taj Mahal in the distant river.
Near the end of his life, with most of his eyesight gone, he still longingly caught glimpses of the magnificent mausoleum reflected on a piece of jewel.
Emperor Shah Jahan had been enormously powerful, yet, in the end, he died in humiliation and grief.
Isn’t it obvious, then, that nothing in the world ever stays unchanging?
