Can anyone generate loving-kindness and compassion?
Question: How can we generate loving-kindness and compassion?
堪布答:慈悲观的产生,不可能一蹴而就,而需要一个长期的过程。Khenpo: Generating loving-kindness and compassion is not something that is done overnight; it’s a long process.
在这个过程中,不但要有善知识的引导、好友的鼓励、家人的影响,以及经常翻阅大乘经论。To cultivate it, the guidance of spiritual mentors, encouragement from friends and loved ones, and regular readings of Mahayana sutras are all conducive factors.
More importantly, one must have some inherent roots of virtue.
没有善根的人,听了多少佛教的慈悲理念,也一点感觉都没有;People devoid of merit from past lives will feel nothing even after hearing many Buddhist teachings on compassion.
反之,前世若是修学过大乘佛法,即生中上师稍微指点一下,哪怕只听了一次短短的讲座、看了佛经中的只言片语,自己的善根也能马上苏醒过来,从此人生有着巨大的改变。In contrast, those having studied Mahayana Buddhism in past lives can promptly awake to their previous potential even hearing just a few words from their teacher, a short discourse, or some scriptural readings. From then on, their lives will see dramatic transformations.
In Buddhism, this is referred to as “having merit and fortune.”
有福报的人,经常会有一些佛缘;没有福报的人,总是遇到各种魔缘。Those so endowed will have ample opportunities to encounter the Dharma, while the have-nots will always run into harmful circumstances.
所以,每个人的根基和因缘不相同,生起慈悲观的程度也不一样。Therefore, the degree of compassion aroused in each individual will vary according to his or her capacity and circumstances.
Do loving-kindness and compassion ever take sides?
Question: Are loving-kindness and compassion restricted by national boundaries?
堪布答:真正的慈悲心,不分国界、不分民族、不分地域、不分信仰。Khenpo: Genuine loving-kindness and compassion do not take into account national boundaries, ethnicities, geographic regions, or different faiths.
只要众生受苦受难,我们有能力的话,就应该无有任何偏袒心,去救济他们、帮助他们。As long as there are beings who are suffering, and as long as we are able, we should offer support and help without partiality.
To be sure, the objects of our compassion must also include animals.
What is the thing we lack most today? It is compassion toward animals!
有一次我上飞机时,看到托运行李的几个工作人员,在搬行李箱时,见到有几箱兔子,就故意一个个使劲扔,看见兔子的惊慌失措,他们开心得哈哈大笑。Once when I was boarding an airplane, there were caged rabbits among the cargo. When the crew noticed the rabbits, they deliberately flung those cages and burst out laughing at the sight of panicked rabbits.
当时我特别不忍心,但也没有办法,只好在飞机里默默念观音心咒。It was an unbearable scene, but I could do nothing except recite the Mani mantra silently in the cabin.
其实动物也是生命,从这小小的行为中,也能看出来有些人的残忍。Indeed, animals are also living beings, yet some humans inflict cruelty upon them, as revealed by this incident.
所以,我们的慈悲心,一定要像阳光一样,遍及动物和其他人的身上。It is essential that we cultivate a compassionate heart as far-reaching as the sunshine, encompassing animals as well as other people.
阳光的普照,不分什么国家、什么种族,同样,我们对所有的众生,也务必要一视同仁。The sun shines everywhere, taking no sides when it comes to country or race; similarly, we should treat all living beings equally.
Between “humaneness” and “bodhichitta,” is one superior to the other?
问:儒家讲的“仁”和菩提心,相同之处在哪儿?不同之处又在哪儿?有没有一个境界的高低?Question: Confucius advocates “humaneness”, or “humanity,” which can mean the quality of being humane; kindness; benevolence. What does “humaneness” of Confucianism and “bodhichitta” of Buddhism have in common? Where do they differ? Is one superior to the other in their ideals?
堪布答:我对儒教典籍很有兴趣,也学习过一些,它的理念对当前来讲不可缺少。Khenpo: I’m quite interested in the classics of Confucianism and have studied some of them. Its ideas are something our society can’t do without today.
不过,儒教的“仁”,范围只涉及关爱人类,时间也仅限于今生。However, the scope of Confucianism’s “humaneness” covers only the human race, and its timespan is limited to the present life only.
而菩提心的范围,包括天下一切生命,从时间来讲,也是生生世世。On the other hand, the Buddhist’s bodhichitta encompasses all forms of living beings and its duration spans life after life.
现在很多人没有专门研究这些领域,以至于概念上有点模糊,觉得二者好像一样。Nowadays, many people who have not specifically investigated these ideas have only a vague idea and think they are the same.
Actually, Buddhism is much more profound.
不管你研究《法华经》《华严经》,还是中观、唯识的思想,都很容易体会到这一点。One needs only to study any Buddhist canon, such as the Lotus Sutra and the Avatamsaka Sutra, or the ideology of the Middle Way and Mind Only Schools to recognize its profundity.
当然,有些人如果没有公正的态度,对此只是一味地排斥,那就另当别论了。Of course, this does not apply to people who have a biased attitude and would reject the notion outright.
但你若是有兴趣,进入这样的领域后,会发现它确实不可思议。However, if you are interested and have explored its content, you’ll find it is indeed unfathomable.
所以,儒教的“仁”和菩提心的相同点,是对人类都有一种仁爱之心。In summary, the similarity between the “humaneness” of Confucianism and the bodhichitta of Buddhism is the love toward humans.
But in terms of the scope and depth of love, there is a huge difference between the two.
