To meditate on impermanence is to be rescued from suffering by all the Buddhas

Lord Buddha once praised the meditation on impermanence:

“多修无常,已供诸佛;

To meditate persistently on impermanence is to make offerings to all the Buddhas.

多修无常,得佛安慰;

To meditate persistently on impermanence is to be rescued from suffering by all the Buddhas.

多修无常,得佛授记;

To meditate persistently on impermanence is to be guided by all the Buddhas.

To meditate persistently on impermanence is to be blessed by all the Buddhas.

Of all footprints, the elephants are outstanding;

just so, of all subjects of meditation for a follower of the Buddhas, the idea of impermanence is unsurpassed.*

Dagpo Rinpoche taught us there are three stages to the practice of impermanence:

At first we should be driven by a fear of death and rebirth, like a deer escaping from a trap with all its strength.

Without such apprehension, well never free ourselves from mundane affairs.

In the middle stage, we should work diligently like a farmer cultivating his field,

so that we are confident about our future and have nothing to regret at death.

In the end stage, we should feel joyful and relieved, like a person who has just accomplished a challenging task.

Its exactly what our precious guru, H.H. Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche, says in his Songs of HappinessIn living I am happy; in death I am happy. At all times I am happy.

Until we reach such a state, we must meditate on death and impermanence single-mindedly.

Geshe Puchungwa once said, If one does not meditate on death in the morning, the whole morning is wasted, and if one does not meditate on death at night, the evening is wasted.

Some people often indulge in fantasy and cram their minds with all kinds of ideas.

No sooner have they thought about one thing then they move to another.

Unable to calm their minds even for a moment, they feel distressed.

Seriously,if one must think busily, the correct subject to mull over is impermanence,

The mountain is impermanent; the river is impermanent; I am impermanent, and so are you. I will die, and so will you. What better teachings can there be?

In his shrine room Venerable Yin Kuang hung a central scroll with an extra-large DEATH character written on it.

If one knows ones death is imminent, what is there still to grasp to? What can one bring along anyway?

Hence, all accomplished masters have taken death seriously, and this is their secret driving force on the spiritual path.

A man called Wu Xinsou of the Song Dynasty was a learned scholar and a devout Buddhist.

He held a high post in the royal court, yet had no ambition for wealth and rank, as he had understood the transient nature of all phenomena.

Day and night he meditated on death, so much so that he ordered a coffin and slept in it at night.

He asked his attendant to beat on the coffin at dawn and say loudly,

Ah, homeward bound you go, Wu Xinsou! The unsettling Three Worlds are no place to dwell! In the Western Paradise a lotus bud is opening up just for you. Homeward bound you go!

Prompted by this chanting, he would immediately get up and start reciting the Buddhas name.

One day, while he was chanting the Buddhas name, his family members heard celestial music in the air.

He told everyone, Buddha Amitabha is here to welcome me to his Pure Land with a golden lotus seat. Its time for me to go.

Then he gracefully left this world.

Life is impermanent and our time of death is anyones guess.

亲友再缠绵不舍,死后也带不走一个;

No matter how intimate you are with your friends and loved ones, none of them will accompany you on the journey beyond death.

财富再令人垂涎,死后也全留在人间;

Even if you possess wealth to the envy of all, you must leave it behind at the last moment.

Your body that has been pampered lavishly will be discarded like a worn shoe when it becomes a corpse.

Venerable Yi Yuan of the Ming Dynasty reminded us,

Waste no time to practice for a rebirth in the Western Pure Land, as death always comes unexpectedly. Sunbeams over the window are gone in a snap of the fingers; how much time is left to you as a human?

遗憾的是,对大多数人来说,无常明明就在眼前,却反而把一切执为常有;

Sadly, most people still think things will last even if impermanence is everywhere.

They still pretend to be young even if they have reached the gates of old age.

They are stressed out in life, not realizing whats really going on.
