Be mindful when circumambulating a stupa
佛塔是十方诸佛菩萨身口意加持的聚合,
The stupa encompasses the blessings of body, speech, and mind of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions.
在转绕的过程中,观想它发出光芒融入自身,净除自己无始以来的一切业障。
As we circumambulate a stupa, we visualize that light beams radiate from it and dissolve into us, purifying all our negative karma accumulated since time without beginning.
清朝时,武昌宝通寺出了一名“摸脑和尚”,
During the Qing Dynasty at Baotong Temple in Wuchang, there was a monk known as “the Head-Touching Monk.”
不计大病小病,只要经他手一摸,便霍然痊愈。
He had an uncanny ability to heal any illness, minor or major, by touching the patient’s head with his hands.
他的手何以有此妙用呢?
How did he attain such a miraculous healing power?
据说该寺有一座宝塔,他每天到塔下转绕,用手摸着宝塔砖石,心里默诵“大悲咒”。
As it turned out, on the grounds of the temple there was a pagoda. Every day, this monk circumambulated the pagoda while touching its bricks and mindfully reciting the Great Compassion Mantra.
十多年如此,天天不间断,故而有此威力。
For ten years, he carried out this ritual without interruption, which likely bestowed on him extraordinary abilities.
青海有一座佛塔,里面藏有赤热巴巾国王(金刚手菩萨的化身)的头发。

本焕老和尚100岁时,我曾去拜见他,
When Venerable Shi Benhuan was one hundred years old, I paid him a formal visit.
他吃完饭以后说:“我们去转佛像吧!”
After lunch, he said, “Let’s go circumambulate the Buddha statue,” and off he went.
老人家跑得比较快,我们在后面跟着,有时候都赶不上。
Even at his advanced age, he walked quite briskly and sometimes it was difficult to catch up with him.
转绕佛塔时,要有一些观想方法。
When we circumambulate, we should apply visualization.
比如说转绕观音菩萨像时,应观想——“外”:诸佛菩萨全部融入于观音像;
For instance, in circling the statue of Avalokiteshvara, we imagine that in an “outer” sense, all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas dissolve into the statue;
“内”:传承上师全部融入观音像;
in an “inner” sense, all the lineage masters dissolve into the statue;
“密”:空行本尊全部融入观音像。
in a “secret” sense, all the dakinis and yidams* dissolve into the statue.
然后一边念“嗡玛尼贝美”,一边转绕。转绕的过程中,想象观音像发出光芒融入自身,自己无始以来身口意所造的一切罪障全部净除。
Then we circumambulate and chant “Om Mani Padme Hum” while visualizing light beams radiating from Avalokiteshvara and dissolving into us, purifying all our negative karma of body, speech, and mind that we have accumulated since beginningless time.
很多大德都说,转绕佛塔时,能观想得更广当然可以,但不能的话,最好也要观想这一点。
Great masters taught that circumambulating with a more extensive visualization is excellent, but if it can’t be done, just try the simpler version as mentioned above.
比如,你今天转一座佛塔,就想这个佛塔是十方诸佛菩萨身口意加持的聚合,在转绕的过程中,它发光净除自己无始以来的一切业障。
转绕时,如果能念转绕咒语,就应该念诵;
If you can recite the mantra of circumambulation, do it by all means.
如果不能念,念观音心咒、百字明、金刚萨埵心咒也可以。
If not, recite others such as the mantra of Avalokiteshvara, the Hundred Syllable Mantra, or the Vajrasattva mantra.
我转坛城塔的时候,主要是念金刚萨埵心咒,
For me personally, when I circumambulate the Mandala Hall at the academy, I mainly recite the Vajrasattva mantra.
因为自己无始以来造的罪业太多了,应当依此来清净。
Since I have committed so many negative actions for eons, I better exert myself in purification.
每次都观想从坛城塔里发光,自己的一切罪业全部得以净除。
I always picture that light comes out from the inside of the Mandala Hall, cleansing me of all my defilements.
绕完了之后,再念一些或长或短的回向文,将功德回向于一切众生离苦得乐,这样的转绕才非常圆满!
At the end, I say a prayer—long or short—to dedicate my merit to all sentient beings that they be happy and free from suffering. In this way, the circumambulation is perfected!
*In Tibetan Buddhism, dakini is the feminine principle associated with wisdom, and yidam is a meditational deity or tutelary deity.
