Robed in rich silk, and with a caravan of a hundred mules and horses loaded with provisions, the defenseless Tsogyal was brought outside. No sooner was she there than the two rivals were after her, vying with each other in speed. Shantipa, the minister of the lord of Kharchu, was the quickest; and seizing Tsogyal by the hair, he tried to take her with him. Tsogyal dug her feet into a boulder, tearing at it as if it were clay. No one could move her; she was as unshakable as a mountain. Tearing off her finery, the wicked minister whipped her with metal scourges on her naked flesh. "Shameless girl!" he cried, "Your parents were unable to command you! Come! Come with me or I will kill you!" And he beat her.
