Making offerings to the Buddha creates good karma

Among all the fields of merit, Lord Buddha is the most exalted one.

If we are serious about amassing stores of merit, we ought to make offerings to the Buddha with devotion.

As the object of our veneration, Buddha’s pictures or statues are as exalted as the real physical body of the Buddha, which we can no longer behold with our own eyes today.

Some people have developed quite amazing qualities through their pious offerings to the Buddha.

China Central Television once reported a case of “the Grandma of Fragrant River”—Zhou Fengchen.

Lady Zhou was an ordinary countrywoman who died naturally on November 24, 1992, at the age of eighty-eight.

Her deceased body, left on her old earthen bed according to her wish, remained intact for more than twenty years without the use of any preservatives or deliberate mummification.

This unusual phenomenon has mystified many people.

In life, Zhou Fengchen was a devout Buddhist who maintained a rather special routine.

She made offerings to the Buddha three times a day: in the morning, at noon and in the evening, and she did this throughout her life without any interruption.

When she was crippled in later years, she would inch toward the shrine by holding onto windowsills and tables.

When she became totally disabled, she would light three joss sticks at her bedside and ask her granddaughter to bring them to the Buddha.

When people brought her fruit, treats, or even a single date, she would always offer them to the Buddha first before consuming them herself.

Over decades, she upheld her pious offerings to the Buddha throughout life’s ups and downs.

The key to accruing merit lies in the quality of our minds, not the quantity of money offered.

So long as we are mindful, there will be plenty of opportunities to accumulate merit.

If we do not have the means to afford real material goods, we can offer beautiful sights—those of fresh flowers, limpid water, blue skies and fluffy clouds, etc.

As long as our minds are pure, the offering made by imagining things like rocks and mud as excellent offering substances will also accumulate immense merit.

Once, when Buddha was making alms rounds with Ananda, two young boys were playing with mud by the roadside.

They pointed to the mounds they had built, “Now this is a house to live in, that’s a storage shed, and this pile is the wish-fulfilling jewel.”

Just then, one of the boys saw the Buddha approaching and was immediately filled with joy.

He gathered his pile of “wish-fulfilling jewel” and walked to the Buddha in order to make an offering.

As he was too short to reach the Buddha’s bowl, he asked the other boy, “Please bend down, so I can climb on your back to offer the ‘wish-fulfilling jewel’ to the Buddha.”

The other boy complied and Buddha also lowered his begging bowl while the mud pile was poured into the Buddha’s bowl.

The Buddha turned and handed Ananda the begging bowl, saying, “Please make this mud pile into a paste and spread it over the walls of the Dharma Hall.”

And the Buddha prophesied, “By the merit of offering me a pile of mud, this boy in a hundred years after my passing will be born in this world as the powerful King Ashoka and the other boy will be his minister. King Ashoka will erect eighty-four thousand stupas all over the world.”

As it turns out, a hundred years after Buddha’s parinirvana, King Ashoka was indeed born in India and became a great patron king of Buddhism.

He built eighty-four thousand stupas and erected many memorial stone pillars at sacred Buddhist sites.

To this day, if we visit India, we will find these pillars are still around.
