那些因车祸、溺水等原因而突然离世的人，可曾想过……

无常绝不会按常理出牌

Impermanence never plays by any set rules

那些因车祸、战争、溺水等原因而突然离世的人，可曾想过他们当天会死？

For people who died abruptly—from a car accident, drowning, in combat, and so on—did it ever occur to them that their life would end on that day?

死亡的到来，从来不跟任何人打招呼，

Death usually arrives without any advance notice.

我们也不敢保证自己下一分钟不会像他们那样。

Are we sure that in the next minute we won’t be just like them?

每天看看新闻，就会发现到处都是死亡的消息。

Every day in the newspaper we read all kinds of news about death.

然而，很多人没有把它当回事，

However, very few of us take such news seriously.

总认为示现无常的是别人，自己永远不会这样。

We feel death is someone else’s business and that it will never occur to us.

《法句譬喻经》中讲过一个故事：

There is a story told in Analogical Scriptures of Codes:

佛陀在舍卫国时，城里有位年近八十的老婆罗门，家财万贯，生性顽愚吝啬。

When the Buddha was in Sravasti, there lived a Brahmin close to eighty years old who was very rich but extremely stingy and obstinate.

他为了给自己建造一栋豪华巨宅，花费大量时间亲自监工，指挥工匠。

At that time he was trying to build himself an extravagant mansion and spent a lot of time supervising construction and workers.

佛陀通过智慧观察，得知他只有这一天的寿命，然其却毫不知情，忙忙碌碌于无义之事，

Lord Buddha saw with his wisdom eyes that the Brahmin had only one more day to live, but the Brahmin, unaware of his fate, still engrossed himself in meaningless activities.

特别可怜，于是就亲自来到他的面前。

As the situation was quite pitiful, the Buddha appeared directly in front of the Brahmin.

佛陀见到他后，问：“你这样卖力是否疲倦？修建如此豪宅有何用处？”

The Buddha asked him, “You are working so hard, don’t you ever get tired? What’s the use of building such a big mansion?”

老婆罗门骄傲地说：“这房子前边是客厅，后边是我的卧室，东西两厢供家人、子女、仆人住。

The Brahmin replied proudly, “This mansion has a living room in its front. On the right is my bedroom, and the east and west wings are for my family, their children, and the maid.

夏天可到凉台乘凉，冬天搬回暖房居住，舒适得不得了。”

In the summertime, the balcony is cool; in winter, the rooms are heated. It will be most comfortable to live here!”

佛陀说：“你这个想法不错，但我有一偈想送给你，你暂且放下工作，坐下来听听好吗？”

The Buddha said, “Your idea is good! But I am here to offer you a verse of teaching. Won’t you take a break and listen to me?”

老婆罗门答言：“我很忙，没空坐下来听，过几天再跟你好好聊吧。你如果有事，可以先简单说一下。”

The old Brahmin replied, “I am too busy to sit down and listen. Let’s find another time for a good chat, unless you have something in mind. If so, make it short.”

佛陀说：“你对未来虽然安排得特别好，却不知无常迅速，很快就会离开人间，还在一味不停地忙碌，再没有比这更愚痴的了。”

The Buddha told him, “You are making nice plans for the future, but you do not realize the swift arrival of death. Soon you’ll depart from this world. What could be sillier than to keep yourself so busy?”

老婆罗门听后，说：“你讲得确实有道理，但我今天实在太忙，以后再聊吧！”

Hearing this, the Brahmin replied, “What you said seems to make sense, but things are just too hectic today. Talk to you later!”

佛陀见他冥顽不化，怎么劝都无济于事，也只好由他去了。

Seeing that the Brahmin was just too stubborn to listen and be helped, the Buddha could only leave him alone.

佛陀离开后不久，老婆罗门亲自去上屋顶的大梁，

Shortly after the Buddha left, the old Brahmin tried to hoist the main beams onto the roof.

结果大梁突然坠下，当场把他砸死了。

Unexpectedly, the heavy beam fell and killed him on the spot.

前不久有一条新闻说：南京一位九旬老人过世后，家人惊奇地发现，他留下了数万元的保健品，要吃十多年才能吃完……

Not long ago, a news report of a nonagenarian in Nanjing read, “After the old man died, his family was startled to find a large stock of his nutritional supplements that would have taken more than ten years to consume...”

不仅仅老人会这样，现在许多年轻人也是如此，为了“将来”殚精竭虑，不停地计划安排。

Not only old people but also young ones today, relentlessly make “future plans” through any possible means.

但无常的突如其来，就会把这一切彻底打乱。

But all their fine schemes simply crumble when the moment of death butts in suddenly.

其实，他们都忘了一件事：死亡的到来，往往是不按常理出牌。

They all forget one thing: “Impermanence never plays by any set rules.”
