一次的恶念，就足以改变自己的命运！

一念之差，福报顿消

A mere slip in thought negates volumes of positive merit

“人心念善，即有善报；

“A mind harboring good thoughts causes fortunate outcomes;

心中念恶，即有恶报。”

A mind harboring bad thoughts brings unfortunate results.”

命运虽然是存在的，但也并非一成不变。

In general, we may be fated to a certain destiny, but it is not absolute.

歹命的人，若尽量行善积德，就算命中本该受苦，也会减少乃至消弭，命运会往好的方向转变；

For instance, it is possible for unfortunate people to ameliorate or eradicate their predestined suffering and change their lots for the better if they strive to perform virtuous acts and accumulate merit.

好命的人，若肆无忌惮造恶，就算本该享受安乐，最终也会大打折扣，人生变得坎坷多舛。

On the other hand, fortunate people predestined to live comfortably may see their luck slip away and their lives become harsh and unbearable should they commit reckless, evil deeds.

从前，福建有一个姓李的人赴京应试。

Once upon a time, a young man Li from Fujian Province was on his way to the capital to take the imperial exam.

要到衢州时，有个店主梦见土地神对他说：

Before his arrival in Quzhou, an innkeeper dreamed of a Deity of the Earth who told him,

“明天有个李秀才来，他有望高中，你要好好接待他。”

“A scholar, Mr. Li, will make a stop here tomorrow. He is likely to win first place in the imperial civil service exam. Receive him well.”

第二天早晨，李生果然来了。

The next morning, Li arrived as predicted.

店主殷勤款待，走时还送给他干粮，并提供车马。

The innkeeper treated him with courteous hospitality and sent him off with ample food as well as carriage service.

李生问其原因，主人把所做的梦告诉了他。

Li asked the reason for his generosity, and the innkeeper told him of his dream.

他听了非常高兴，晚上暗自琢磨：

Upon hearing it, Li was overjoyed and thought to himself that night,

“我妻子相貌太丑，不配当官夫人。一旦我考中当了大官，就该换一个才对。”

“Once I get high scores and am appointed to a high government post, I should get myself a new wife, since my current one looks too ugly to be a court madam.”

李生走后，店主又梦见土地神说：

After Li left, the innkeeper had another dream in which the Deity said,

“那个人居心不良，功名还没成就，就想抛弃妻子，现在他已失去考中的希望了。”

“That guy, Li, harbors an evil mind. Even before he procures any achievement, he is already contemplating dumping his wife. There’s no hope for him to get ahead in the exam.”

李生再来时，店主对他非常冷淡，甚至不留他住宿。

When Li returned after the exam, the innkeeper was very cold and indifferent to him. He did not even offer him a night’s stay.

李生问是什么原因，店主原原本本地讲给他听。

Li asked him the reason for his drastic change in attitude and the innkeeper told him the whole story.

李生又惊又愧，灰溜溜地走了。

Ashamed and shocked, Li left with his tail between his legs.

后来，他果然一辈子都未得到功名。

As the dream foretold, Li was estranged from any fame or success throughout his whole life.

可见，一次的恶念，就足以改变自己的命运。

Therefore, thinking an evil thought, even for a moment, is enough to overturn one’s luck.

现在有些人心非常恶，虽说暂时赚了不少钱，享受了种种世间快乐，但这也只是前世善业的余报，用尽之后就没有了。

Nowadays, some very devious people appear to enjoy a wealthy and pleasurable life, which is merely the residual effect of previous good karma. Their provisional happiness will soon come to exhaustion,

而他如今所造的恶业，一旦在未来哪天成熟，必将无法逃避痛苦的果报。

and the fruit of their evil acts in this life, whenever they mature, will beget inevitable suffering upon them.

所以，尽管现在世风日下、人心不古，但我们仍不应该同流合污，而要坚持高尚的行为。

Even if the morality of our world is worsening day by day and ethics seem out of fashion, we should not succumb to the corrupt temptations of the herd. Instead, we must uphold our integrity and do noble deeds.

毕竟，将来的因果绝对会自作自受，只不过是早晚而已！

After all, we each have to bear the effects of our own actions; it’s just a matter of time!

在遇到天灾人祸时，为了给亡者超度、令生者消灾免难，让我们共同祈祷观音菩萨，念观音心咒“嗡玛呢叭美吽”108遍以上。
