Live each day as if it were an entire lifetime
Try to live each day as if it were an entire lifetime. At the end of each day, check with yourself: What good deeds have I done in “this life?”
If no virtue has been gathered in childhood, youth, or in later years, then your whole life has been wasted and you will be unprepared for death.
No matter how old we are now, we should remain mindful of the impermanence of life and make early plans for our remaining years and future life.
How can we arouse this mindfulness about impermanence?
Kunzang Palden Rinpoche imparted to us a pith instruction: We practice mindfulness by seeing every day as a whole lifetime.
也就是,早上观想自己刚得人身,是孩童时代;
That is—in the morning, imagine you were just born and you live as a child;
中午观想自己为壮年人;
at noontime, think that you have reached the prime of your life;
下午观想为老年人;
in the afternoon you are turning into an old man;
晚上观想开始生病,接近死亡;
and at night picture your health failing and that you are moving closer to death.
入睡时观为离开人世;做梦观为中阴阶段;
When falling asleep, believe you’ve left this world and your dream state is the bardo* state,
and when you wake up the next morning, you are reborn in your next life.
By living every day as if it were an entire lifetime, at the end of each day you can verify what good deeds you have accomplished in “this life.”
If no virtue has been gathered in childhood, youth or in later years, then your whole life is wasted and you will be unprepared for death.
Such meditation adds value to each and every day.
If you practice it constantly, your mind will remain calm and open under any circumstance, and you will not be driven to extremes by any problem.
Consequently, joy and peacefulness will permeate all your activities.
Alas, people these days rarely prepare for life’s impermanence but rather make huge plans based on temporal affairs. Isn’t that a serious mix-up!
*The bardo is an indeterminate or transitional state of existence between death and rebirth.
