苏，梵语ghr!ta，音译伽里多，谓以酪精制者；有生苏、熟苏之别。蜜，梵语madhu，音译摩度，谓蜂采花中甘液所酿成者。据四分律卷四十二载，佛陀听许有病比丘服用五种药，即苏、油、生苏、蜜、石蜜等。
