亡者已逝,请别再给他添苦
Please add no more pain to the deceased
一个人死后,家人若能为他念经做佛事,这对亡者有极大的利益。
When a loved one dies, the surviving family can bring great benefit to the dead by performing Buddhist death rituals or reading sutras.

反过来说,家人若为他造恶业,比如杀生祭祀,也会增添亡者的负担和痛苦。
Conversely, performing non-virtuous deeds such as animal sacrifice only adds more burden and suffering to the dead.

佛经中记载:一次,佛陀与阿难在河边行走时,看见有五百个饿鬼一边走路一边唱歌,特别欢天喜地的样子。
A sutra tells this story: Once, when the Buddha and Ananda were passing by a riverbank, they met five hundred hungry ghosts* who sang while walking and appeared exceed­ingly happy.

阿难问佛陀原因,
Ananda asked the Buddha why this was so.

佛陀回答:“这些饿鬼的子孙,正在替他们修福,他们快解脱苦海了,所以开心得唱歌跳舞。”
The Buddha replied, “The off­spring of these ghosts are now performing virtuous acts in their names, which will bring these ghosts imminent liberation. That’s why they are sing­ing and dancing so happily.”

后来,又遇到好几百个饿鬼,很伤心地走了过去。
Later on, they met a few hundred other hungry ghosts who walked rather dejectedly.

阿难又问佛陀,
Again Ananda asked the Buddha why this was so.

佛陀告诉阿难:“那些饿鬼的子孙,正在为他们杀生作祭祀。饿鬼身后有火逼迫,所以一直在嚎哭。”
The Buddha replied, “The offspring of those ghosts were performing sacrificial rites in their names, which winds up as burning fire falling upon the ghosts. That’s why they are crying nonstop.”

《地藏经》中也讲过:“人命终之后,千万不要为其杀生,拜祭鬼神。
The Sutra of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha’s Fundamental Vows says, “When family members die, never kill animals in their names to worship ghosts and spirits.

此举对亡人无丝毫利益,只能增添他的罪业。
Such acts are not the least bit helpful to the deceased, but only pile more defile­ment onto them.

假使他原本应往生善趣,也会因为家人的杀业,反落恶道。”
The deceased could have been born in the higher realms, yet they end up in the lower realms because of the slaughter committed by their relatives.”


从前,有个姓金的人,吃斋戒杀,非常虔诚。
Once, a devout person by the last name of Jing had long abstained from taking lives and eating meat.

他死后魂识附在一孩子身上,通过其口告诉妻子:
After he died, he attached his consciousness to a little child and spoke through the child to his wife,

“我因为善业不深,没有往生净土,但在阴间已经很快乐了,来去都很自由。”
“My virtue was not good enough for me to take rebirth in a Pure Land. Nonetheless, I am pretty happy here in the underworld where I can come and go as I please.”

一天,他突然呵斥妻子说:“为什么在我墓前杀鸡祭祀?
A few days later, he suddenly scolded his wife, “Why did you kill a rooster and offer it to me at my grave?

今天已有人监视我,不像以前那么自由了!”
I have been under watch today and can no lon­ger enjoy the freedom I once knew!”

由此可见,人死之后,不能以造恶业来祭祀,不然就会给亡人增加痛苦。
Obviously, we should never commit non-virtue in the name of the deceased, lest we add more suffering to them.

在藏地,如果父母去世了,孩子却经常杀生、为非作歹,人们就会说:“这家留下了那么坏的子孙,还在不停地造恶业,他们的父母真是可怜!”
In Tibet, if children kill animals or do other harmful deeds after their parents’ passing, people will say, “This house­hold has bad offspring who keep on committing misdeeds. How pathetic are their parents!”

所以,有些老父亲、老母亲也要注意了:趁自己还没有过世,尽量要劝孩子多做善事,这样,你的今生后世才会安稳。
Therefore, granny and granddad, take note: While you’re still around, try your best to exhort your descendants to be virtuous. Only then will you enjoy peacefulness in this life and in many lives to come.


* Hungry ghost realm is one of the six existences identified in Buddhist cosmology. (The other five are: gods, demi-gods, humans, animals, and hell beings.) Hungry ghosts are characterized by insatiable hunger and craving.
