“Fame is the devil’s flattery of you”

如果你是狮子,别人骂你是狗,你不会真的变成狗,故不用为此而伤心;

If you were a lion, you would not turn into a dog if someone calls you names like you were a dog. There’s no need to get upset about it.

If you were a dog, you would not transform into a lion if someone compliments you as if you were a lion. There is no need to be pleased about it either.

A professor in Boston said, “In the past, people were content to have the attention of parents, teachers and peers.

However, nowadays, that’s not enough; people want to attract the attention of all the world’s media.”

For instance, there was a middle-aged man in Henan Province who was fanatically craving fame, but had no way to fulfill his fantasy. When Bin Laden caused the 9/11 incidents, he took the opportunity to proclaim himself as Bin Laden’s younger brother!

Even though making such a claim borders on insanity, people like this man will try at all costs to show off in order to catch others’ attention, be it from admiration, denigration or sarcasm. So long as the public’s eyes are on them, they’ll gloat over their feat.

However, what exactly can “being famous” offer to people anyway?

If it can bring you long life and happiness, or make you healthy, strong and free from illness and misfortune, then chasing after it would be all right.

But the fact of the matter is, no amount of fame can ever guarantee you long-lasting happiness, or, at your deathbed, extend your life even for half a day.

The siddhi, Gungtang Tenpai Dronme, says, “When the thunder of fame starts roaring one after the other, the clouds of good fortune start to dissipate one by one.”

Geshe Khampa Lungpa also taught, “Fame is the devil’s flattery of you.”

Many people have trouble seeing this point and cling tenaciously to their reputation.

They become utterly miserable when they are hit by slander that spoils their life and job. Some even resort to ending their own lives.

In the eyes of the wise, this kind of behavior is like kids crying at the beach when their sandcastles are washed away by the tide—very naive and laughable.

Fame is nothing but a pile of words and phrases, as insubstantial as echoes in a valley.

如果你是狮子,别人骂你是狗,你不会真的变成狗,故不用伤心;

If you were a lion, you would not turn into a dog if someone calls you names like you were a dog. There’s no need to get upset about it.

If you were a dog, you would not transform into a lion if someone compliments you as if you were a lion. There is no need to be pleased about it either.

That’s right—praise from others adds no value to your worth, nor can blame from others diminish your worth. Take no heed of either.

As stated in The Precious Treasury of Pith Instructions: “Understand that applause and reproach are but echoes from the hollow valley.”

Let us, then, maintain such a mindset whenever we hear others’ appraisals about us.
