Don’t bemoan your lot when bad things happen to you
Nowadays, people are not satisfied with their status quo and will strive at all cost for fame and power.
However, even if they manage to have it all, they still crave more.
Such an endless chase will only bring ruin to oneself.
As it has been taught, “Avarice gets you nowhere.”
In our human world, there have been many emperors or kings who have enjoyed the very pinnacle of power and material wealth.
But in the end, all their splendors were gone, and none of them escaped death.
Nowadays, many top leaders of powerful nations head millions of subjects. But once they step down from their office, overnight they become common citizens and no longer have others at their beck and call.
Isn’t this a stark display of impermanence!
In the history of China, the First Emperor of Qin (260–210 BC) put an end to the Warring States Period and unified all of China for the first time.
He proclaimed himself Qin Shi Huang (the first emperor), in that he had surpassed the achievement of all the ancient emperors and rulers prior to him.
Moreover, he specified that his son who would succeed his throne was to be called the Second Emperor of Qin, and his son’s son would be the Third Emperor of Qin, and so on,
until the hundred thousandth generation.
However, his dynasty survived only to the second round.
Impermanence, besides being played out in history, is also obvious in our everyday lives.
The high officers and judges who sentenced others to jail in previous years may find themselves incarcerated the following year after being indicted for corruption.
The above examples are enough to show that power, fame, wealth and pleasure cannot remain forever in one’s possession;
like dewdrops on summer days or clouds in the autumn sky, they vanish in no time.
However, people lacking an understanding of impermanence will still do anything to chase, amass, and protect these worldly glories.
But no matter how hard they try, they will eventually lose it all.
Inasmuch as all phenomena are transitory, when bad things happen to us we need not feel unlucky or miserable.
Furthermore, when we experience pain personally, we are more able to empathize with others when such things happen to them.
