Do not regard the “Hundred Peaceful and Wrathful Deities” as mere clay idols
In the bardo state after death, everyone will experience the vision of various peaceful and wrathful deities.
If in life you had some understanding of them, you will recognize them as the display of the Five Buddha Families.*
Becoming acquainted, even by chance, with the bardo teachings while we are alive will help us attain liberation when we die.
This is illustrated by a story well known in Tibet:
Once upon a time, there lived in Tibet an old lady who got along well with a wealthy man’s family in her neighborhood.
When the wealthy man died, his grief-stricken wife sent a messenger to inform the old lady, who then went over to console the widow and help out with smoke offerings and other chores.
At that time, many lamas were invited to come and perform the forty-nine-day recitation of Liberation through Hearing.† Thangkas depicting the Hundred Peaceful and Wrathful Deities were hung in the shrine room.
The old lady had never seen anything like that, and observed the drawings with immense curiosity.
She asked one of the lamas, “What are these pictures about?”
The lama told her, “These are the deities that will appear to everyone at the time of death.”
Utterly wonder-struck, she responded, “Really? Isn’t it incredible! How do these things manifest when a person dies?”
The old lady was suspicious of the answer she got; nonetheless, it did arouse some faith in her. Later, she went home, her mind half-believing and half-dubious.
Three years later, the old lady passed away, and her bereaved children asked lamas to recite the scriptures for forty-nine days.
As Tibetan tradition also calls for the surviving children to entrust their parent’s spirit tablet to a high lama following the completion of the scriptural readings, the old lady’s son set off to Lhasa to seek the Karmapa’s blessing.
When he arrived at the Karmapa’s monastery, many visitors were there, and he had to wait two days for his turn. Finally, on the third day he met the Karmapa, who was sitting on a chair in a garden.
The old lady’s son first made offerings to the Karmapa and then presented his mother’s spirit tablet to him, pleading, “My mother has died. Please guide her to liberation. Please grant me my wishes!”
The Karmapa shook his head, “I can’t promise you. Sentient beings must revolve according to their own karmic forces; it’s not within my power to exert any influence.”
The son said, “Please then, tell me where my mother has been reborn.”
The Karmapa replied, “How can I tell? I possess no clairvoyance and can’t see anything supernaturally.”
The son became desperate and pleaded, “Please do not say such. Please! You must tell me where my mother has been reborn! Please guide her and bless her so that she will be liberated in Buddha’s Pure Land.”
Again the Karmapa replied, “I have neither this kind of ability nor this kind of supernatural power.”
Insisting, the son said, “You are absolutely endowed with such ability and power! You definitely are!” He then reached out to grab the Karmapa’s legs and implored tearfully, “Grant me my wishes! If not, I won’t let go of your legs!”
At length, Karmapa sighed, “Oh well, your mother was reborn in a Pure Land a few weeks ago.”
The son could hardly believe what he had heard, “You are making this up, aren’t you? My mother never knew any practice nor had she recited mantras or the Buddha’s names. How could she have attained liberation? You only said that because I wouldn’t let go of your legs. Right?”
“Not really,” Karmapa said. “Didn’t one of your neighbors die three years ago? When your mother went over to console his family, she happened to see the drawings of the Hundred Peaceful and Wrathful Deities.
At that time one of the lamas told her that they were the deities that manifest when people die. As it turned out, your mother saw these deities after she died; she recognized them immediately and thus gained liberation on the spot.
If you don’t believe me, go back home and ask that lama about details. You’ll see what I’m talking about.”
After returning home, the son soon tracked down the lama and asked him what had happened.
The lama replied, “Yes, indeed. At that time your mother was totally ignorant. When she saw the thangkas of the Hundred Peaceful and Wrathful Deities, she asked me what they were. I told her that these are all the deities that will appear to people in the bardo state.”
Hearing the explanation, the son immediately aroused strong faith in the Hundred Peaceful and Wrathful Deities.
Chagme Rinpoche also taught, “If you make some connection with the Hundred Peaceful and Wrathful Deities — by seeing their images, hearing about them, or studying on them — you will be ensured of accomplishment in the future, even if you have never received any empowerment or tantric lineage transmission.”
As a matter of fact, even if you don’t make good connections with all the hundred deities, merely making connection with one deity and recalling that deity alone will bring about liberation just as swiftly and effortlessly.
Once there was a shepherd in Tibet who used to lead his flock of sheep to the mountainside to graze. At noontime he usually brought his food to a nearby monastery and ate lunch there.
His favorite lunch spot was at the foot of a wall of the monastery.
On the wall there was a mural portraying one of the Hundred Peaceful and Wrathful Deities, which had the body of a human and the head of a deer.
The shepherd knew nothing about this deity’s identity or significance, but he had a habit of taking out half of his lunch every day to offer to the deity, saying, “My good friend, this portion is yours; let’s have lunch together!” Day after day, he did the same thing.
Later, the shepherd died and arrived at the bardo state. As soon as this deity depicted on the wall appeared to him, he recognized the display, and out of sheer habit, said, “My good friend, let’s have lunch together!” And he attained accomplishment, just like that.
Again, there was an old granny who used to walk past a monastery and heard the scripture recitations by the monks there.
She happened to hear the following paragraph quite often: “This deity, having the head of a red woodpecker and the body of a human, holds a bow and arrow in his hands and radiates light beams...To this deity I pay homage respectfully. I pray that... ”
This passage kept on surfacing in the old granny’s mind and she was quite perplexed, “How could this be—a deity with a human body, a red woodpecker head, holding a bow and arrow, and radiating light?”
Again and again she heard the readings, again and again she pondered day and night with growing curiosity, to the extent that she even looked forward to meeting this deity face to face.
Later this old granny died, and in the bardo of self-manifestation this shining deity with a human body, a red woodpecker head, and a bow and arrow in the hands indeed appeared.
As she had no problem recognizing this deity, she was liberated right away.
Therefore, whenever we see pictures of the Hundred Peaceful and Wrathful Deities, we should clearly identify their forms and implements, understanding that they will appear to us when we die.
当然,每个人的根基不同,有些人死后,文武百尊会原原本本现前;
Of course, we all differ in faculties. To some, all the Hundred Peaceful and Wrathful Deities will appear from beginning to end.
To others, that will not be the case, and the deities may look just like plain animals.
If this happens to you, do not arouse the intention to harm them, nor should you regard them as true animals. Otherwise, they will morph into the henchmen of the hell realms, which, incidentally, is also the illusory display of the mind.
Be aware that each of the Hundred Peaceful and Wrathful Deities only appears in correspondence to our mind.
All such drawings are, in fact, imbued with profound hidden meanings, and are not entirely the depiction of greed, hatred, and stupidity, as someone might imagine them to be.
Again, it is only through faith that one will be liberated through seeing these images. People uninitiated in the esoteric teachings may have the wrong view, “How on earth can there be so many deities with animal heads in Buddhism?”
In fact, they simply do not know that everyone will experience the visions of these deities in the bardo state after death.
If you have gained some understanding of them while you are alive, when you die you’ll realize them as the displays of the Five Buddha Families.
The instant such a pure view arises in your mind, all your greed, hatred, and ignorance will vanish, and you will attain accomplishment effortlessly.
