A change in your perception may bring you a new life

Many people believe they have come to terms with death and are not afraid of it. But once the reality of death hits them, they panic and lose their wits.

Many illiterate old men and women who have faithfully recited Buddha’s name all their lives, on the other hand, can remain composed when death approaches. They are fully confident about their rebirth to Buddha’s Pure Land.

To a devoted Buddhist, happiness is in death, and happiness is in life; every situation can be adapted to with ease.

An American woman came to see Dudjom Rinpoche in New York in 1976.

She had no particular interest in Buddhism, but she was extremely sick. In her desperation she tried to see if a Tibetan Buddhist master could help her in some way.

She came into the room and upon seeing Dudjom Rinpoche, who seemed so compassionate and caring, she broke down into tears and blurted out, “I have only a few months to live! Can you help me? I am dying!”

Dudjom Rinpoche, in a gentle, compassionate way, began to chuckle. Then he told her quietly, “You see, we are all dying. It’s only a matter of time. Some of us just die sooner than others.”

Immediately, these few words eased her anxiety and she saw that there was hope for her deliverance.

She later took refuge in Buddhism and received teachings from Dudjom Rinpoche on accepting death.

It is said that she recovered miraculously by following this practice with complete dedication.

Hence, even when a patient is condemned as hopeless by the doctor, dramatic healings can happen through Buddhist meditation and practices.

To be sure, this kind of recovery won’t work in all cases of illness. Even so, having learned some Dharma will help alleviate the patient’s terror when death comes.

It’s normal that we all have to leave this world one of these days. When struck by fatal illness or imminent death, we do not need to feel desperate. That will not help.

Instead, pay homage to enlightened beings by reciting their names or mantras and vow to be of benefit to sentient beings. This is the most helpful thing to do.

For instance, I knew a college student who got cancer. She decided to drop all worldly concerns and recite Buddha’s name wholeheartedly to deal with her predicament. Amazingly, her cancer disappeared.

To worldly people, hearing about death makes them utterly terrified and distraught, and they resolve to live on no matter what it takes.

However, Buddhists who are well prepared can adapt to any situation with ease. To them, happiness is in death, and happiness is in life.

When it comes in relating to death and dying, there is a huge difference in the attitudes between those who have studied the Dharma and those who have not.
