天天想着怎么赚钱，修行必定一无所成
“得便宜处失便宜，贪什么”
You lose when you gain, so why crave things?
一个贪财的世间人，即使拥有一时的风光，下场也不会尽如人意；
A covetous worldly person, even having managed to enjoy momentary glories, may meet a less-than-glamorous ending.
一个贪财的修行人，整天心心念念想着怎么弄到钱，修行也必定一无所成。
A spiritual practitioner, poisoned by an ulterior intention to garner money, will never get anywhere on the spiritual path.
当今时代，人们的欲望极度膨胀，
At present, human desire is running amok.
物质上虽已相当富足，但为了心中那个天文数字，仍殚精竭虑地追求财富。
Despite significant increases in material wealth, people still hanker after astronomical sums and plot at all costs to get richer.
他们有十万想二十万，有一百万想一千万……
Having amassed assets of ten thousand, they go after one million; after reaching one million, ten million is next...
有一次，我去了藏地一个地方，有人问我：“我们这里有些人年年修房子，什么时候才修得完啊？”
Once, while I was visiting Tibet, a person asked me, “Some people here keep on remodeling their houses. When will they finish?”
我说：“如果人的贪心没有止息，房子是永远修不完的。
I said, “Unless one has eradicated greed, there is no end to home improvement.
今年有条件会修二层楼，
With the resources available this year, they’ll renovate the second floor.
明年条件更好会修三层楼……
With more money next year, they will start on the third floor, and on and on.
贪心一年比一年大，房子也会一年比一年高。”
The house will get taller and bigger each year in proportion to one’s growing cravings.”
对贪心大的人来讲，纵然一人独占世上的所有财富，也仍然不会感到满足。
To an avaricious person, even being the sole owner of the entire world’s wealth will not be satisfactory.
打开电视、翻开报纸，现在到处是经济犯罪的新闻：贪污受贿、挪用公款……
Whenever we turn on the TV or read the newspaper, we are bombarded with news of financial crimes—cases of corruption, bribery, embezzlement of public funds, and other dishonesty.
许多罪犯在供词中都说：“本来我也知道这是犯法，可是在金钱的巨大诱惑下，不得不铤而走险——”
The perpetrators often confessed, “I knew this was against the law, but I could not resist the temptation of a huge windfall...”
佛经中有这样一个故事：
A story was told in the Buddhist scripture:
秋收时节，有个人挑着一担豌豆行路，
During the harvest season, a man carried two baskets of beans using a shoulder pole.
途中他将担子放在一棵树下，然后就去方便了。
At one point he placed the baskets under a tree and went around the corner to relieve himself.
这时，一只猴子从树上下来，偷偷抓了一把豌豆。
Seizing the opportunity, a monkey slipped down from the tree and helped himself to a handful of peas.
在返回树上的时候，一颗豌豆落到了地上，
As he was rushing back up the tree, a pea dropped to the ground.
猴子放下手中的一把豌豆，赶忙下来捡。
Immediately, the monkey let go of all the peas in his hand and hurried down to pick up the single lost pea.
恰巧那人回来了，抛出一块大石头击中了猴子，猴子不幸当场丧命。
Just then, the man returned. He threw a large stone that hit and instantly killed the poor monkey.
路人见此情景，不禁感慨：
When passersby saw what happened, they lamented,
“舍弃一把豆，而寻一粒豆，历经百般苦，此猴真愚痴。”
“Isn’t this monkey stupid? He dropped a handful of peas just to salvage one lost pea and paid with his life!”
所以，《大庄严论经》中说：“知足第一富。”
That’s why The Ornament of the Mahayana Sutras teaches, “Contentment is the greatest wealth.”
知足少欲才是最大的富翁，
One who feels he has enough and needs nothing more is the richest person.
这种远离贪欲、自由自在的快乐，就连天王也很难享受到。
He is free from craving and enjoys a kind of carefree happiness that eludes even the heavenly kings.
然而，令人惋惜的是，许多人往往不懂这一点！
It’s a pity that many people fail to see this point!
