有些地位低下的人，特别喜欢有权有势、腰缠万贯的大人物，

There are people of low status who particularly adore wealthy and powerful bigwigs.

在他们面前毕恭毕敬、阿谀奉承，每当他们来的时候，就人前人后跑来跑去，点头哈腰。

They act extremely deferential,hovering around them, nodding and bowing—fawning over them like sycophants.

但实际上，恭敬承侍这些高高在上的大人物，也没什么太大意义。

But actually, it is not very meaningful to serve these high and mighty people.

因为在世间利益方面，他们不会成全你什么；

When it comes to worldly benefits, they will not give you much.

在人格、智慧以及出世间法的修行方面，更不可能助你一臂之力。

As for character, wisdom, and the cultivation of transcendental teachings, it is even less likely that they will be of any help at all.

就像一位贪心炽盛的老人妄图追求年轻貌美的姑娘一样，

It is just like an old man who, burning with desire, vainly pursues a beautiful young maiden.

姑娘不但不高兴，可能还会怒目相向。

Not only will the maiden be displeased, she might even glare furiously at him.

同样，地位低下的人对所谓高贵的人心存期望，也根本不会如愿以偿。

Similarly, those in humble positions cannot possibly attain their desires by placing their hopes in so-called privileged people.

还有些人，各种欲望层出不穷，

Then there are people who have an endless flow of desires.

始终期待着一些不切实际的东西，

They are always waiting for unrealistic things to happen.

白天晚上都在焦虑之中度过，致使生活中鲜少安乐。

Spending their days and nights in worry, they make happiness and peace rare in their lives.

他们不知道自己的命还有多长，却总盘算着在这做一件大事，在那做一件大事……

They do not know how much longer they will live, yet they are always planning to make a big impact here or accomplish an important project there.

天天这样打妄想，真是很可怜。

Every day thinking wishfully like this, they really are to be pitied.

总之，这些行为都非常不如法，

In brief, all these actions are in conflict with the Dharma.

若静下心来想想，就会发现它对自己不仅没有任何实益，还让人生虚度得很快。

If you calm your mind and reflect, you will discover that not only are they of no true benefit to you, but they also hasten the vain passing of life.
