It was Goe the Elder who decided the case. "If Bon prospers,the king is unhappy and fainthearted. If the Buddha dharma prospers,the ministers lack confidence and are ineffective. If the two are placed on an equal footing, they are like fire and water, mortal enemies.Let us uproot anything that menaces the kingdom. A public trial will settle the matter. Truth will be separated from falsehood by disputation and will be decided by the casting of votes. The correct doctrine will be revealed and distinguished from the false, and nothing more need then be done. Tomorrow, therefore, with the king presiding from onhigh, and the ministers and court seated before him, let the Buddhist monks take their place in a row on the right and let the Bonpos face them on the left. And let the contest begin!Philosophical positions will be distinguished, and then we will drink to the truth, casting false hood far away! Let miracles beworked as the mark of truth; let each display his powers and skills! Then, if Dharma be proved true, let us hold to it and let the Bon be uprooted. But if Bon be true, let the Dharma be abolished and Bon confirmed. Let us make a law to this effect.Let punishment fall on any who transgress it—king or minister, queen or courtier! All of you, take a pledge!"

The king, his ministers, his queens, and his court agreedand gave their word. Even the Bonpo ministers pronounced the mselves in favor of the pledge, for they thought that the Buddhists could in no way vie with the Bon in miraculous displays and wonder-working. Then the pious king spoke to the Buddhist panditas, saying:

Emaho!

Learned sages,Lofty masters of accomplishment, pay heed to me.

Like executioners are Buddhists and the Bon.

When they meet, they give no quarter!

Confusion fills the king, his queens, and ministers,

And Bon and Buddhism are doubted equally.

Tomorrow, therefore, they will both contend:

Striving with each other in miracles and powers,

With signs of truth and tokens of attainment.


Whichever doctrine is revealed as true,The king and ministers will believe and follow.

The king, his ministers, his queens, and his court agreed and gave their word. All the panditas rejoiced and gave this answer to the king:

Sacred   Majesty, powerful among men!

This is the proper way to act,The way of all religious kings!


That which is not Dharma will be overcome by Dharma.

Demons and the  evil-hearted will be cowed by truth!

The sages and accomplished masters gathered here—

None is greater even at the Diamond Throne!


In former  times, the heathens were subdued by truth,

Why should we now fear to rout the Bon?

Let penalties  be dealt to those who lose,And let them not remain or linger here!

Right it is to drive them hence with laws!

 The Benefit of Beings 


辩论决定去留


It was Goe the Elder who decided the case. "If Bon prospers,the king is unhappy and fainthearted. If the Buddha dharma prospers, the ministers lack confidence and are ineffective.


Fainthearted:胆怯的;畏怯的


于是苟长老决定了事件的发展。假如苯教兴盛,国王就不开心,而且不能果决行动。假如佛法兴盛-大臣们又会缺乏信心,并且效率不彰。



If the two are  placed on an equal footing, they are like fire and water, mortal enemies. Let us uproot anything that menaces the   kingdom. 


假如将两者放在同一位阶上,又会水火不容-形同死敌。让我们彻底根除任何对王国的威胁。


A public trial  will settle the matter. Truth will be separated from falsehood by disputation and will be decided by the casting of votes.


一场公开的审判将能解决这个事情,在辩论中当可区分眞理和邪见,并由表决而定。



The correct doctrine will be revealed and distinguished from the false, and nothing more need then be done.


教法是错误的还是正确的,到时当能辨别显露,便可了结一切。


比赛就位


 

Tomorrow, therefore,   with the king presiding from on high, and the ministers and court seated   before him, let the Buddhist monks take their place in a row on the right and   let the Bonpos face them on the left. And let the contest begin!


因此,国王明天将会居于上位主持,大臣和朝众坐在国王面前,佛教僧众于右列入座,苯教徒面对佛教徒坐在左方,随后就让比赛开始!



Philosophical positions will be distinguished, and then we willdrink to the truth, casting falsehood far away! Let miracles beworked as the mark of truth; let each display his powers and skills!

哲学立场会被辩明,我们将能享用眞理,并把歪理抛得远远的!让神通力作为眞理的象征,双方各显神通能力!


Then, if Dharma be proved true, let us hold to it and let the Bon be uprooted. But if Bon be true, let the Dharma beabolished and Bon confirmed.


若是证实佛法的眞实不昧,我们就奉行佛法,把苯教连根拔除,倘若苯教是眞理,就废除佛法,确信苯教。



Let us make a law to this effect.Let punishment fall on any who transgress it—king or minister, queen or courtier! All of you, take a pledge!"


让我们制定一条律法确立此言的效力,无论谁犯法都会受到惩处—不管是国王或大臣,王妃或朝臣!你们所有人,起誓!」


眞实教法得明辨


The king, his ministers, his queens, and his court agreed and gave their word.Even the Bonpo ministers  pronounced themselves in favor of the pledge, for they thought that   the Buddhists could in no way vie with the Bon in miraculous displays and   wonder-working.


in favor of:赞成

vie[vaɪ]:竞争;争夺 If one person or thing is vying with another for something, the people or things are competing for it.


国王和大臣、妃众、朝臣全都表示同意,许下承诺。甚至苯教徒还宣称要誓言守约,因为他们认为在神通的展现和运用方面,佛教不可能和苯教相比。



Then the pious   king spoke to the Buddhist panditas, saying:

Emaho!

嗳玛吹!

汝等饱学圣者众,

成就大师等谛听。

佛教苯教信徒众,

如行刑者不相让

致使王及妃臣惑,

苯佛两教皆存疑。

双方明朝可如意,

互相比试神通力,

作为眞理成就兆。




Whichever   doctrine is revealed as true,

The king and ministers   will believe and follow.

Falsehood will   be utterly suppressed and banished,

眞实教法得明辨,

王臣众等皆信奉。

不实教法尽灭除,

驱逐边疆荒蒸地。

细思王臣此裁定。
