Mistreating ones parents has its consequences to bear

There is no graver misdeed than ill-treating our own parents.

According to the Sutra of Miscellaneous Treasures, when the Buddha was in city of Sravasti,

he taught the monks: “Offering the tiniest kindness to parents generates immeasurable merit, while committing the tiniest infraction against them incurs immeasurable evils.”

The monks asked, “What are the paybacks of these two kinds of behavior?” The Buddha then told a story:

Once upon a time, in the ancient state of Benares, there was a man named Mitra who was overjoyed to finally have a son. But he was fearful that some evil might befall him, so named him Maitrakanyaka, which means “Daughter of Maitra.”

Maitrakanyaka lost his father at an early age and his mother painstakingly raised him.

By the time he had grown up, the family money was exhausted, so he had to work selling firewood to support himself and his mother.

At first, he earned two coins; later, he made four coins, then eight, then sixteen. Each time, he gave his mother all the money he had earned.

People noticed his business talent and said to him, “When your father was alive he ventured across the seas to seek his fortune. Why don’t you follow in his footsteps?”

Hearing this, Maitrakanyaka asked his mother, “Father used to cross the oceans to search for treasure. Why can’t I do likewise?”

His mother, thinking her son had been so dutiful all along and not imagining he would desert her, jokingly replied, “Sure, you can go too!”

Thinking he had received his mother’s permission, Maitrakanyaka made up his mind to go and planned his trip.

When he formally bid goodbye to his mother, she was shocked, saying, “I have only you, my son! To search for treasures across the vast seas is most dangerous; your father and other ancestors have all died during their journeys.

You may only venture to the seas after I am dead. Please don’t go!”

Maitrakanyaka obstinately refused to listen, saying, “If you didn’t give me your permission in the first place, I wouldn’t have planned the trip.

But you did, so why are you stopping me now? I simply have to go!”

The mother, seeing his firm determination, started crying and clutched his feet tightly to prevent him from leaving.

Maitrakanyaka pushed away his mother’s hands and tried to extricate his feet, but in the scuffle he pulled out a dozen of his mother’s hairs.

Finally, the mother let go of her grip because she feared her son would suffer the consequences of his impious action.

The son went to sea with his crewmates and found treasure. However, he became separated from the others. Alone, he wandered around in many places and finally came upon a castle made of cast iron. Driven by his karma, he walked into the castle with delight, only to find it was an Ephemeral Hell*.

There, Maitrakanyaka saw a man with a flaming steel wheel revolving around his head, pulverizing his brain and torturing him immensely.

He asked the man, “What evil have you done to deserve this?”

The man answered, “I kicked my mother in the head, and this is the fully ripened effect.”

No sooner had Maitrakanyaka realized how he had similarly hurt his mother than a flaming steel wheel fell on his head.

Like the other man, his brain was smashed to a pulp, flying in all directions.

Just then he thought: In the realms of samsara there are many beings suffering like me for having hurt their mothers. May all their suffering ripen in me, and may I alone bear it for all of them!

Immediately, the fiery wheel flew up into the air, his agony ceased, and he was liberated from all pains.

Who was this Maitrakanyaka?

He was none other than one of Buddha Shakyamuni’s previous incarnates.

After reading this story, shouldn’t we understand better the severity of disrespecting our parents?

*In Tibetan Buddhism, there are eighteen hell realms: eight hot hells, eight cold hells, the neighboring hells, and ephemeral (or temporary) hells.
