A prayer wheel makes your wishes come true
古大德说：“如果转经轮里面有一万个观音心咒，那么转一圈，就有相当于念了一万遍的功德。”
The sages of the past said, “If ten thousands mantras of Avalokiteshvara are stored in one prayer wheel, then the merit of turning this wheel once is equivalent to that of reciting the mantra ten thousand times.”
藏地的人们自古以来就信仰佛教，拿转经轮的现象非常普遍。

这种善法简便易行，轻而易举就能成办重大的事业。
It is a skillful means to accomplish great virtue effortlessly.
如果让你布施钱财供养僧众，你不一定有这种能力；多年闭关修行，也有一定的困难，
Perhaps you have no money to offer to the Sangha, nor are you able to take a long-term retreat at will.
但如果有时间使用一下转经轮，不需费力就能积累许多资粮。
However, you can certainly find time to turn the prayer wheel, which allows you to easily amass a vast store of merit.
从世间的角度来讲，转经轮还可以让人升官、发财、得名声，在很多记载中，这方面的感应不胜枚举。
From a worldly perspective, turning prayer wheels can bring favorable conditions for gaining a promotion, getting rich, or becoming famous. There are many documented accounts in these respects.
世间和出世间的一切功德，均依赖于我们的发心和身语的力量，而身语所造的善根中，转经轮的功德最大。
Our stock of merit — worldly and spiritual — is derived from the power of our mind’s intention and the actions of our body and speech.
我们口里念《金刚经》《阿弥陀经》，功德是很大；身体做磕头、转绕等，功德也不小，
Great merit is generated from reciting sutras such as the Diamond Sutra or the Amitabha Sutra, or from physical actions like prostration or circumambulation.
但按照佛经的教证，这些跟转经轮的功德比起来，后者的功德远远超胜前者。
However, according to scriptural teachings, the merit coming from these activities still falls far behind that of turning prayer wheels.
对我而言，不管在车里还是家中，每天用一下转经轮的话，心里比较舒服。
To me personally, turning the prayer wheel every day calms and comforts my mind, whether at home or on the road.
如果当天没有用，或是忘在家里，总有一种空荡荡的感觉。
If I miss turning it for a day, or forget to bring it on my trip, I feel a bit lost.
这种行为对我身边的很多人，直接或间接也有一点点影响。
This habit of mine seems to have had a positive influence on the people around me.
尤其是有人死亡时，假如实在来不及超度，或者没有人超度，或者这个人不信佛教，那在他头的周围放一个转经轮，他就根本不会堕入恶趣。
When a person dies, if there is neither enough time nor a proper person to perform the death ritual or if the deceased was not a Buddhist, then placing a prayer wheel around the head will shut the door to the lower realms for this person.
我经常也这样想：“我死的时候，不知道身边有没有金刚道友？如果有，我会要求他放一个转经轮在我的枕旁。”
Often I muse, “At my deathbed, will there be a Dharma friend near me? If so, I’ll ask him to place a prayer wheel next to my pillow.”
现在汉地有些人认为：“转经轮是藏传佛教的，我们没必要去学他们的传统。”
Some Han people maintain that: “The prayer wheel is found only in Tibetan Buddhism; there’s no need for us to follow their tradition.”
说这种话的人，可以说有点孤陋寡闻。
Those making such remarks are indeed ill informed.
实际上，汉地也有转经轮的传承。
In fact, the tradition of prayer wheels also exists in the Han land.
汉地早期的转经轮称为“轮藏”，
It is called the “Revolving Bookcase for the Sutras” or “Revolving Archives,”
是南朝梁代的傅大士发明的。
and was invented by Fu Dashi (Bodhisattva Fu) of the Liang Dynasty.
《释门正统》中说：“令虔诚者推轮藏一匝，则与看读经藏具同等功德。”
The Lineage Holders and History of the Tian Tai School of Buddhism says, “Spinning of the revolving archives by a devoted person accrues the same merit as reading the sutras.”
《神僧传》亦云：“有发于菩提心者，能推轮藏，是人即与持诵诸经功德无异。”
Similar passages also are found in The Biographies of Eminent Monks.
汉地从南到北的许多古老寺院，都安置有轮藏，这种轮藏与藏地的大转经轮没什么差别。
From southern to northern parts of the Han area, many ancient temples enshrine the revolving archives, which in essence are not different from the big prayer wheels of Tibet.
既然轮藏可以推转，手上拿转经轮为什么不行？
Since these sutra wheels are turned at the temples, it is not inappropriate to turn the hand-held prayer wheel.
没有教理依据、对众生有害的事，我们不去学是可以的，但对自他真正有利的行为，为什么非要极力排斥呢？
Activities that harm beings or contradict the scripture are not for us to follow but activities which benefit self and others are not for us to reject.
所以，念观音心咒、用转经轮这些具有功德的善事，我们一定要受持。
Therefore, we should endeavor to engage in meritorious deeds such as reciting the mantra of Avalokiteshvara or turning the prayer wheel.
