如果想专修一法,无常最为重要

If one has to choose only one Dharma practice, it is to meditate on impermanence


如果你害怕死亡,明白人生里里外外的事无一不是无常,

If you are afraid of death and have meditated on the unpredictable nature of all phenomena,

 

无常就会变成动力,你也会觉得余下的人生不能白白浪费,必须好好用来修行。

you’ll be driven to devote your remaining years in earnest spiritual practice rather than wasting them meaninglessly.



一位居士曾问博朵瓦格西:“如果想专门修行一法,修什么法最为重要?”

A lay disciple once asked Geshe Potowa what Dharma practice was the most important one to do if he had to choose only one.

 

如果是我们有些人,可能会回答“念阿弥陀佛”、“明心见性”、“修无上大圆满”……

If this question is posed to us, we are most likely to answer, “Recite Buddha Amitabha’s name,” “Realize the nature of the mind,” “Meditate on the Great Perfection,” and so on.

 

有许许多多说法,每个人也喜欢不同的窍诀。

In fact, different opinions abound, and we all have our pet pith instructions.

 

但博朵瓦格西是如何回答的呢?

But, back to Geshe Potowa—what was his answer?

 

格西答道:“如果想专修一法,无常最为重要。”

The Geshe replied, “If you want to use a single Dharma practice, to meditate on impermanence is the most important.”



莲花生大士在教言中,讲过这样一个比喻:有个人不慎坠落悬崖,慌乱中抓住了崖壁的一把草。

Padmasambhava made one analogy in his teachings, “A man accidentally tumbled off a cliff. Panicked, he managed to catch hold of a clump of grass by the edge of the cliff.

 

他紧抓不放,往下望去,是万丈深渊。

Holding on to the grass for dear life, he trembled at the sight of the deep abyss below.

 

这时出现一只白老鼠,叼走一棵草;

Presently, a white mouse appeared and snipped away a piece of the grass.

 

又出来一只黑老鼠,叼走一棵草,

Then a black mouse came along and chewed away another piece of grass.

 

两只老鼠就这样轮番叼,他手中的草越来越少。

These two mice took turns snipping away the grass, and the tuft of grass became thinner and thinner.

 

正在这时,他看到旁边有棵果树,树上长满了水果,他津津有味品尝着水果的甜美,完全忘记了自己身处险境。

Just then the man noticed some honey dripping from a beehive above and he caught some of it in his mouth. Captivated by the delicious taste, he completely forgot his predicament.”

 

这个比喻是什么意思呢?

What is this story trying to say?

 

我们的寿命就像是那把草;

The clump of grass represents the frailty of life;

 

黑白两只老鼠,比喻白天和黑夜,它让我们的寿命不断减少;

the black and white mice symbolize days and nights; and their chewing of the grass represents the shortening of our lifespan.

 

身边的水果,比喻世间的名闻利养;

The honey stands for worldly wealth and fame;

 

身下的万丈悬崖,比喻死后的三恶趣。

the sheer precipice is the metaphor of the three lower realms waiting for us.

 

简单来说,我们的寿命眼看就要走到尽头,若还一味沉迷在妙欲的点滴快乐中,

Simply put, our life is soon coming to an end and if we only indulge in drips of temporal pleasures,

 

那么一旦生命彻底结束,等待自己的就只有一条路——堕入恶趣。

when we die we will have no other direction to go but into the lower realms.

 

然而,许多人并不知道这一点。

However, most people are oblivious to this tenuous situation.



有些人年到花甲,却还忙着为未来描绘各种蓝图;

Older folks in their sixties still make all kinds of grand plans;

 

有些年轻人认为自己身强力壮,用不着也没时间去想死亡的恐怖,

younger ones feel they are healthy and strong, they have no need nor time to worry about death.

 

却不明白“黄泉路上无老少”的道理,

Little do they know that “death spares neither the old nor the young,”

 

不知哪天死亡就会突然降临。

and there’s no telling when the last moment will strike unexpectedly.

 

看看我们的周围,每分每秒都有许多人死去,有些是病死,有些是横死,有些是自杀……

Just look around us. Every minute and every second, many lives are ending from illness or accident or from self-inflicted injury.

 

死亡的呼啸声一直在我们耳边回响,只不过我们一直充耳不闻,或者用双手紧紧捂住耳朵。

The clamor of death rings in our ears but we just pretend to be deaf, or we cover our ears tightly.

 

但这样做,死亡就会离我们远去吗?

Do we imagine that by doing so death will walk away from us?

 

世间人对“死”字特别忌讳,平时连想都不敢想、连提都不愿提,

To worldly people, talking about death is considered morbid, and mentioning death risks wishing it upon themselves. They would rather brush off the subject or drop the issue altogether.

 

一旦无常落到了头上,只能哭哭啼啼、万般不舍地撒手而去。

However, once the reality of death falls upon them, they leave this world wailing and whining, however reluctantly.

 

如果你害怕死亡,明白人生里里外外的事无一不是无常,

If you are afraid of death and have meditated on the unpredictable nature of all phenomena,

 

无常就会变成动力,你也会觉得余下的人生不能白白浪费,必须好好用来修行,

you’ll be driven to devote your remaining years in earnest spiritual practice, rather than wasting them meaninglessly.

 

最后像米拉日巴尊者那样获得了无生无死的把握,纵然死亡来临也丝毫无惧。

In the end, like Jetsun Milarepa, you’ll capture the fortress of the deathless nature of mind and go beyond all fear of dying.
