Then Atsara Pelyang vied with the Bon, measuring himself against them in a verbal tournament. And in this the latter were victorious. The Bon party raised their standard and praised their gods. The king sent them a present of drink, where at the Bon ministers were greatly pleased and sent generous gifts to the Bon contestant. The king was downcast, but the Precious Master said, "Quick to win and quick to lose! They have done well in the riddle-game, but this has nothing to do with the Dharma. Now the nine Bon scholars and the great panditas will debate on religious matters". Thereupon, the mighty sage Vimalamitra rose from the front row and said:

Everything arises from a cause.

That cause the Tathagata has explained.

The exhaustion of this cause,

The great Renunciate has set forth:

Do no wrong of any kind,

Practice virtue to perfection,

And your own mind perfectly subdue.

Then he sat in vajra posture, floating in mid-air. With three snaps of his fingers, the nine Bon wizards fainted away, while the nine Bon scholars were struck dumb and sat there bewildered, unable to answer. In the same way, the twenty-five Indian scholars, and the hundred and eight Tibetan translators, each began with a scriptural exposition and then went on to debate, showing different authentic signs of accomplishment. The Bon were left speechless and were unable to work any true miracles, floundering in confusion and darkness.

The Bon ministers rebuked them. "So!" they cried. "They have won the debate! But now let each of you demonstrate his miracles. These monks have dazzled the entire population of Tibet, gods and men, with their wonders; their disputations are a delight to hear; their demeanor is charming and the people are so happy with them that we, the ministers, feel we have been tricked. Whatever you are capable of, signs of accomplishment, miraculous powers, or evil spells, be quick about it!" And in the fury of their evil hearts they whipped up the Bon with harsh and terrible words: "These Indian barbarians have contaminated the swastika gods of the Bon. We will not contend with the panditas now but will slay them with magic later. We will dispute instead with the translators, for they are Tibetans!"

Meanwhile, the pious king was showering the panditas with praise, presenting each of them with a measure of gold dust, a golden ingot, and brocade robes. The banner of the Dharma was raised aloft; the conch was sounded, and a rain of wonderful flowers actually fell from the sky. Deities appeared in the heavens, with words of poetry on their lips, and the people of Tibet, filled with awe, their faces wet with tears, gave their hearts to the Dharma.

But on the rows of the Bon there fell a deluge of hail and rocks, so that the Bon ministers cried out, "The gods have revealed who is in the right!" And they made prostrations to the Buddhist scriptures, placed the feet of the panditas up on their heads, and confessed their sins to the translators. The pious king beheld a vision of Manjushri and understood within his heart what was true Dharma and what was falsehood. Most of the people were saying that the Buddhists had the victory, with a doctrine that was great and wondrous. And with that, they began to disperse, giving their word that they would all practice it.

当不造生任何恶,

修习善德臻圆满,

完全调伏彼自心。





内道大显神通

Bewilder:[动词 + 名词短语][常用被动态] to confuse sb 使迷惑;使糊涂


他随后以金刚跏趺坐姿浮在半空中,手指三弹,九名苯教巫师当场昏厥过去。这时,九名苯教学者目瞪口呆地坐在原地,狼狈地答不出话来。






In the same way, the twenty-five Indian scholars, and the hundred and eight Tibetan   translators, each began with a scriptural exposition and then went on   to debate, showing different authentic signs of accomplishment.


二十五位印度学者以及一百零八位藏地译师,以类似的方式,一位接着一位,先以经典论述开头,接着进行辩论,各显不同的成就征象,



The Bon were left speechless and were unable to work any true miracles, floundering in confusion and darkness.

flounder [ˈflaʊndə(r)]:   [单独使用的动词, usually + 副词或介词短语] to struggle to   move or get somewhere in water, mud, etc. (在水、泥等中)挣扎


而苯教参赛者那方则是完全哑口无言,手足无措,无法行使任何神通,因而陷入黑暗慌乱。




The Bon   ministers rebuked them. "So!" they cried. "They have won the   debate! But now let each of you demonstrate his miracles.


苯教的大臣们提出非难。「又怎样!」他们喊道,「他们臝了辩论!但是现在要让你们每个人各自展示神通。



佛教大获全胜


These monks have dazzled the entire population of Tibet, gods and men, with their wonders; their disputations are a delight to hear; their demeanor is charming and the people are so happy with them that we, the ministers, feel we have been   tricked.

Demeanor:<正>行为,举止,态度


这些和尙用神通力使得全藏地人民、神祇都眼花撩乱,他们的驳论听来愉悦,他们的行止尤为迷人,百姓和他们在一起是如此快乐,这让我们这些大臣感到被愚弄了。





Whatever you are capable of, signs of accomplishment, miraculous powers, or evil spells, be quick about it!" And in the fury of their evil hearts they whipped up the   Bon with harsh and terrible words:


不管你们有什么能力成就征象、—神通力量、邪恶咒语,速速施展出来!」大臣们出于邪恶心中的强大怒气,用严属吓人的话语鞭策苯教的参赛者:





"These Indian barbarians have contaminated the swastika gods of the Bon. We will not   contend with the panditas now but will slay them with magic later. We will dispute instead with the translators, for they are Tibetans!"


「这些印度来的野人已经玷污了苯教的雍仲神明。我们现在不和这些班智达比赛,等一下要用神幻法术宰了他们。现在我们应当转向与译师们进行比试,因为他们都是藏地人!」



Meanwhile, the   pious king was showering the panditas with praise, presenting each of them   with a measure of gold dust, a golden ingot, and brocade robes. The banner of   the Dharma was raised aloft; the conch was sounded, and a rain of wonderful flowers actually fell from the sky.


于此同时,虔诚之王正在大讃班智达,给予每人各一捧金沙、一盏金锭和锦缎僧袍。法幢高举,法螺响起,天空甚至降下了美妙花雨。





Deities appeared  in the heavens, with words of poetry on their lips, and the people of Tibet, filled with awe, their faces wet with tears, gave their hearts to the Dharma.


天神出现于天上,口讃诗歌;藏地的百姓大感敬叹,脸上淌着泪水,全心全意归顺佛法。






But on the rows of the Bon there fell a deluge of hail and rocks, so that the Bon ministers cried out, "The gods have revealed who is in the right!"

Deluge[ˈdɛljudʒ]:洪水; 泛滥; 倾盆大雨


苯教队伍那边却是狂降一阵冰雹和石块,这使得苯教大臣们呼号道:「神明已经显示了谁才是正确的!」



And they made   prostrations to the Buddhist scriptures, placed the feet of the panditas   up on their heads, and confessed their sins to the translators.


他们并且向佛教经典进行礼拜,向众班智达之足顶礼,向译师们忏悔自己的罪孽。




The pious king  beheld a vision of Manjushri and understood within his heart what was true Dharma and what was falsehood.


虔敬之王在净观中见到文殊菩萨,内心领悟到什么才是正法、何者为非。



Most of the people were saying that the Buddhists had the victory, with a doctrine that was great and wondrous. And with that, they began to disperse, giving their word that they would all practice it.


大部分人都说佛教徒获得胜利,佛陀教法是伟大神妙且不可思议的,因此人们开始散去,并且许诺修持佛法。
