若想孝敬老人，教他用转经轮
To benefit elders, teach them to turn the prayer wheels
莲师说：“善男子、善女人，凡是欲求往生极乐世界者，应当勤转此经轮，五无间罪也可依此得清净。”
Master Padmasambhava says, “Oh sons and daughters of spiritual heritage, should you desire to be reborn in the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, you ought to turn prayer wheels diligently. This will exonerate you from even the five crimes of immediate retribution.”
在我们藏地，人到了五六十岁时，家人就让他“退休”了，什么事情都不用干，
In Tibet, family members usually let a person “retire” between the ages of fifty to sixty years, whereupon he or she is no longer expected to do any household chores.
只是一心一意地念观音心咒、转经轮。
Instead, they devote their time to reciting the mantra of Avalokiteshvara and turning prayer wheels wholeheartedly.
而汉地的情况并不是这样，人老了，要操心的琐事还不少，实际上这是儿女不孝的一种表现。
But this is not the case in Han China where old people are still entangled in numerous responsibilities, which reflects the offspring’s lack of filial piety (humble devotion to parents).
真正对父母孝顺的话，应该为了他们的来世着想。
Being genuinely pious to our parents means to care about their future lives.
我们藏地就有一种传统：孩子如果非常孝顺，他出差回来经常会带转经轮。
In Tibet, a dutiful son will traditionally bring back prayer wheels for his parents when returning from a trip.
毕竟父母的年纪这么大了，现在最适合他们的，就是多念观音心咒、阿弥陀佛圣号，多用转经轮。
After all, for old parents at a ripe old age, there are no better things to do than to diligently turn a prayer wheel and recite the Mani mantra or the Buddha Amitabha’s mantra.
所以，若想孝敬家里老人，一定要让他学会用转经轮。
Therefore, a sure way to care and respect the elders in your family is to urge them to turn the prayer wheel.
高僧大德也经常使用转经轮，
Accomplished masters also turn the prayer wheel frequently.
像华智仁波切无论到哪里去，随身都有一个黑色的转经轮；麦彭仁波切的家里，也有一个经常用的转经轮；
For example, Patrul Rinpoche always brought a black prayer wheel with him wherever he went and Mipham Rinpoche kept a prayer wheel at home that he used all the time.
我的上师——法王如意宝，大大小小的转经轮也不少，甚至在他去美国、印度等国家时，也总是带着转经轮，一有时间就用一下。
My guru, H.H. Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche, had assorted prayer wheels and during his travel overseas to the United States, India or other places, he’d bring one with him and use it whenever he got a chance.
以前法王如意宝讲过，藏地有位非常出名的空行母，叫西琼堪卓玛（《西藏生死书》中的林萨秋吉），她经常前往中阴界，虽然去过十八大地狱，却从来没有见过生前使用转经轮的人堕地狱。
Our guru once taught that Khandroma Lingsa Chokyi, a renowned female practitioner in Tibet, journeyed often to the bardo realm and the eighteen great hells. She has never seen anyone who used the prayer wheels during their life be reborn in the hell realm.

对我个人来讲，从小到现在，对转经轮的感情非常深。

小时候在山上放牦牛时，就有一个黑色的小转经轮，无论下雪也好、下雨也罢，走到哪里，都是一边光脚放牛，一边用转经轮。
As a little shepherd boy, I used to herd barefoot on mountain slopes while carrying a small dark-colored prayer wheel with me. Wherever I went—rain or snow—I would watch yaks and turn the prayer wheel at the same time.
上学时，学校纪律比较严，但我也在每天晚上睡觉之前，把转经轮悄悄拿出来，慢慢地用一下。

另外，手动转经轮在使用时，我们一定要注意：
When turning the prayer wheel, we must be careful to turn it in the clockwise direction.
务必要顺时针转，里面的经文不能颠倒，心咒的字应完好无损，否则过失比较大。
Inside the wheel, the scriptures should never be wrapped the wrong way and the mantras should be free from blemishes. Otherwise, our good efforts will not be rewarded.
请了转经轮之后，若有一位具相上师对其开光，加持力会更大。
After we obtain a new prayer wheel, it is best to have it consecrated by an authentic teacher, which will multiply the power of its blessing.
当然，若条件不具足、因缘不具足，没有开光的转经轮也可以使用。
Of course, if causes and conditions do not permit, an un-consecrated prayer wheel will serve fine.
