Fortune comes only when not chased after

From the Buddhist point of view, to have just adequate money to meet one’s needs is good enough.

An overwhelming desire to make tons of it will only bring endless trouble to oneself.

In fact, it is only when you curb your excessive craving for money that you will find fortune, along with inner peace and happiness.

What kind of people are the happiest?

Are they the mighty rich, the dazzlingly beautiful, the powerful rulers, or the most renowned?

It is none of them.

The Buddha taught us that the happiest person is the one who is content and has fewer desires.

There is a story in Analogical Scriptures of Codes:

Once there lived a Brahmin king of Dhuome who adhered to ninety-six non-Buddhist doctrines.

On one occasion he had an urge to do good deeds and decided to make great offerings.

Thus, he piled up mountains of gold, silver, and all kinds of treasures and invited everyone to come forth to take a handful of his offerings.

The Buddha saw the time was right to teach the king and presented himself as a Brahmin in front of him.

The king asked, “What would you like to have?”

The Brahmin said, “I want to have a house.”

The king offered him a handful of treasures.

But no sooner had the Brahmin walked seven steps than he turned around and returned the jewels.

The king asked why he did so,

and the Brahmin answered, “These jewels may be sufficient to build a house, but they are not enough to marry a wife, so why should I bother to take them?”

The king said, “I’ll give you three more handfuls.”

The Brahmin walked away with the additional jewels, but returned again after seven steps.

The Brahmin explained to the perplexed king, “For me, it’s not enough to have just a house and a wife.

I would still need land, servants, cows, and horses; these jewels are not enough for all of that.”

The king responded, “I’ll give you seven more handfuls.”

But again the Brahmin returned after walking seven steps,

and said, “I’ll have many offspring later on, and this money is far from enough to care for them.”

The king finally offered the Brahmin all of his treasures, but after accepting them the Brahmin returned it all.

Now the king was really upset and demanded an explanation.

The Brahmin answered, “There are just too many things people desire in life, and no amount of money will ever be sufficient to cover it all.

Life is too short. I would be better off forsaking all craving to pursue spiritual attainment.

Therefore, I do not want any treasure.”

The more the king pondered the Brahmin’s words, the more he felt they made sense.

The Buddha then appeared in his real form and said this verse to the king,

“Better than attaining the most wealth, the highest position, or the biggest fortune is to realize the Truth.”

The king was overjoyed to behold the Buddha’s immaculate form and hear this verse.

He asked Buddha’s permission to receive the five precepts* for lay followers.

Later, he attained excellent accomplishment.
