Being generous does not depend on having money
舍得舍得,有舍才有得;
Hands that give also receive,Releasing grasping opens up opportunities.
Hands that grip also lose,Tightening that grip smothers chances.
Some of you may wonder, “If it is true that ‘it is only through giving that one receives,’
then I must not have accumulated merit in past lives because I am so poor in this life. I am penniless,
so how am I supposed to make any offering?”
As a matter of fact, you can make offerings even without money, as long as you treat others courteously with your body, speech, and mind.
In the Sutra of Miscellaneous Treasures the Buddha lists seven kinds of offerings that require no money but still reap great merit:
眼施:以和善的目光看别人;
Gaze offering: to look at others with kindness.
和颜悦色施:以和蔼悦意的表情对待别人;
Countenance offering: to greet others with a pleasant and friendly expression.
言辞施:对别人宣说柔和的语言;
Speech offering: to talk to others in gentle words.
身施:起立、迎送、礼拜父母师长,并且以自己的实际行动帮助别人;
Manners offering: to stand up when greeting parents, teachers, and elders; to welcome them courteously; to prostrate to them; to take actions to help others.
心施:以善良、恭敬之心对待别人;
Heart offering: to treat others with kindness and respect.
床座施:为父母师长铺设座位,或者将自己的座位让给他人;
Seat offering: to prepare comfortable seats for parents, teachers, and elders, or to give up one’s own seat to others.
Dwelling offering: to offer one’s own home for others to stay.
These kinds of offerings can be made by anyone. Therefore, a shortage of money does not hamper making offerings.
Opportunities are everywhere as long as one cares.
