“生火烧柴以后，不用特意去求，灰烬也会自然产生。
“When firewood is set aflame, ashes are produced automatically without effort.
同样，一个人若有强烈的利他心，不用刻意去争取，自己的利益也能无勤成办。”
Similarly, when a person strives for the benefit of others, self-benefit naturally follows without being consciously pursued.”
要想除掉旷野中的杂草，最好的办法，就是在上面种庄稼。
The best way to eliminate weeds in a wild field is to plant crops in it.
同样，要想遣除我们内心的苦恼，唯一的方法，就是用利他的美德去占据它。
Likewise, the only way to drive off defiling emotions in our mind is to occupy it with virtuous thoughts of helping others.
大乘经论中再三告诫我们：
The Mahayana sutras have repeatedly admonished us:
一切痛苦的来源，就是为自己；一切快乐的来源，就是为众生。
The source of all suffering is self-grasping and the source of all happiness is caring for sentient beings.
据说从前一个人去上帝那里，和上帝讨论天堂和地狱的问题。
It is said that a man once went to see God to discuss matters concerning Heaven and Hell.
上帝对那个人说：“好吧，我让你看看什么是地狱。”
God said to the man, “Okay, I’ll show you what Hell is like.”
他们走进一个房间，那里有一大群人，围着一大锅肉汤，
They walked into a room with many people surrounding a big pot of meat stew.
但每个人都饥饿而绝望，原来他们拿着一个比手臂还长的汤勺，没办法把汤送到嘴里。
All of them looked desperate and starving, as everyone was holding a spoon longer than their arms and no one was able to get any stew into their mouths.
上帝又对那个人说：“来吧，再让你看看什么是天堂。”
Then God said, “Now I’ll show you what Heaven is like.”
他们走进另一个房间。那里的一切，和前面房间的一模一样，还是一群人、一锅汤、一样的长柄汤勺，
They walked into a room with exactly the same setting: the same amount of people, the same pot of meat stew, and the same long-handled spoon.
但唯一不同的是：大家都在高兴地唱歌跳舞，特别开心。
The only difference was that everyone there was happy and had a great time singing and dancing.
那个人问：“我不懂，为什么同样的环境，他们快乐，而那个房间的人痛苦？”
The man asked, “I don’t get it. The situations are exactly the same. So why are these people happy while in the other room everyone is miserable?”
上帝回答：“这很简单。因为在这里，大家都在喂别人，而在那里，他们只喂自己。”
God answered, “It’s easy to explain. In Heaven, everyone is feeding the other person. In Hell, people try to feed only themselves.”
所以，只有为别人，才能真正为自己。
Therefore, it is only by helping others that you’ll really help yourself.
法王如意宝也经常强调：“生火烧柴以后，不用特意去求，灰烬也会自然产生。
Our beloved guru, Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche, often emphasized, “When firewood is set aflame, ashes are produced automatically without any effort.
同样，一个人若有强烈的利他心，不用刻意去争取，自己的利益也能无勤成办。”
Similarly, when a person strives for the benefit of others, self-benefit naturally follows without being consciously pursued.”
试想，假如你认为幸福是建立在发财、升官、感情等基础上，
Just imagine: If you build all your perceived happiness on the foundation of becoming rich and famous or having wonderful relationships,
那么这些一旦出现问题，你的人生就会像垮了地基的墙壁一样陷入崩溃。
then if something goes wrong with them, your life will crumble like a wall losing its foundation.
而你若时时抱着利他之心，那生活中无论出现任何得失荣辱，都会云淡风轻、一笑了之，最终无论做什么，也很容易心想事成。
On the other hand, if you always hold an altruistic mind, none of the gains, losses, honors or disgraces that come with life can perturb you. You’ll simply dismiss them with a smile and move on, breezing through whatever tasks you need to tackle.
所以，人活着到底是为了什么？务必要有个正确定位。
What is the purpose of our life? This is something we should establish correctly in the first place.
