珍惜感情，绝不贪执
Cherish relationships, but never grasp onto them
有些人对感情的贪执特别可怕，
Some people have tenacious attachments to sentimental relationships.
得不到梦寐以求的爱情、朝思暮想的恋人，就万分痛苦、生不如死。
If they fail to secure the love they dream of or to win over the lover they yearn for, they suffer immensely and feel that to live is no better than to die.
这个原因是什么呢？就是没有观修过无常。
What is the cause of this? It is because they have not meditated on impermanence.
从前，有个国王叫嘎那日巴，他和王妃的感情特别好，多年来二人两情缱绻，难舍难分。
Once there was a king called Karnaripa who was deeply in love with his queen. For years, the two were bonded by love and could hardly tear themselves away from each other.
一日，国王突发奇想，想考验王妃对自己的感情有多深，
One day, the king had a strange idea: he would test how profoundly the queen truly loved him.
就让仆人谎称国王被老虎吃掉了，
He told his subjects to fake a report that the king had been devoured by a tiger and had died.
自己躲在王宫的花园里，观察王妃的反应。
He then hid in the palace garden to observe the queen’s response.
王妃听到这个消息后，五脏俱焚、伤心过度，当下就气绝身亡了。
When the queen heard this news, she was grief stricken beyond description. Her heart burst and she died suddenly on the spot.
国王见此，肝肠寸断、悔不当初，
Witnessing what had happened, the king was overcome by remorse and wept until he could weep no more.
把王妃的尸体背到尸陀林，终日守护在旁边，寸步不离，
He carried the queen’s corpse to the burial ground and personally guarded it day and night.
一边痛哭一边深情呼唤王妃的名字——瓦邦嘎娜。
Again and again, he called out the queen’s name with intense affection. “Oh! Oh! Pingala! Pingala!”
尸体慢慢腐烂成了白骨，白骨又渐渐地风化，但他始终没有离开。
The queen’s corpse decomposed, leaving only the bones, which also gradually disintegrated.
就这样，他在尸陀林里过了八年左右。
Time went by, and the king stayed at the grave for almost eight years.
后来有位上师想救度他，
Later, a spiritual adept aspired to deliver the king from his misery.
就拿一个瓦罐去了尸陀林，
He went to the cemetery with an earthenware pot,
到他附近故意两手一松，瓦罐掉在地上，摔成了一堆碎片。
which he intentionally dropped when walking close to the king. The pot fell to the ground and was broken into many pieces.
上师装作伤心欲绝的样子，一边哭喊，一边叫着“瓦罐”的名字。
Pretending to be grief-stricken, the yogi started crying and wailing, “Oh! Oh! Pot! Pot!”
国王见后忍无可忍，暂时停止了对王妃的思念和呼唤，
Disrupted by this spectacle, the king could not stand it and temporarily halted his own mourning.
过去劝他：“你这个人真的很笨！
He walked over and spoke to the yogi, “Hey, you stupid yogi!
瓦罐破了，值得这么伤心吗？难道它会永远不碎？你再找一个瓦罐不就完了。”
Why do you cry over a broken pot? Did you think it would never break? Oh for heaven’s sake, just find yourself another pot!”
上师反过来说：“你这个人比我更笨！
The yogi countered, “Wait a minute, aren’t you much sillier than I am!
我的瓦罐碎了，至少还有碎片，
For me, my pot was smashed, but at least its fragments are still around.
你的王妃现在连微尘也不见了，你还在这里痛苦不堪。”
However, your queen’s body has become ashes and can’t be seen anywhere. Yet, you grieve for her still!”
国王如梦初醒，顿然明白一切都是无常的，
The king was jolted awake, like suddenly roused from a dream. He saw that nothing lasts.
进而对上师生起信心，请求他摄受自己。
With rising faith in the yogi, he asked to be accepted as a disciple.
后在上师的调化下，他完全证悟了心的本性，成为了不起的大成就者。
Following his guru’s instructions, the king thoroughly realized the true nature of mind and became an accomplished master himself.
我经常跟大家开玩笑：“你们以后若见有人离婚了、失恋了，也应拿个罐子在他面前摔碎，然后假装失声痛哭
I often joke: “If you want to help someone who is grieving—over a divorce or from falling out of love—you may as well bring a pot and break it in front of him, and then pretend to cry loudly.
——这是一个窍诀啊，可能会起点作用。”
Mind you, it is a pith instruction that may just work!”
如今由于教育和媒体的引导，许多人对感情极为执著，因情而痛苦的比比皆是。
Nowadays, conditioned by their upbringing and media messages, many people are obsessed with relationships and often suffer from love sickness as a consequence.
其实，你若能了解一些佛教道理，比如万法皆为无常，缘合则聚、缘灭则散，就会明白“情”也不过如此。
The Dharma holds that all phenomena are impermanent: Just as fate brings two hearts together, so will fate set the two hearts apart. With this understanding, we will come to see that sentimental love is actually “much ado about nothing!”
