Spend but a third of your good fortune you’re entitled to

The adage goes: “Demise follows the exhaustion of merit.”

Therefore, if we wish to live longer or to enjoy more happiness in our brief human existence,

we must not squander our merit and fortune.

In this life each person has only a limited amount of merit and good fortune, like savings in the bank.

Such stores of merit, if not cherished but wasted recklessly, will be exhausted and one will experience terrible suffering or a hastened demise.

In the Yuan Dynasty there lived two scholars who were born at exactly the same hour, on the same day, in the same month and year, and thus had perfectly matching astrological signs.

When they took the civil service exam, they both scored well and were appointed as magistrates on the same day: one stationed in Ezhou, the other in Huangzhou.

Not long after, the magistrate at Huangzhou died, to the grave terror of the Ezhou magistrate. Fearing his own imminent death, he promptly prepared his will.

However, after seven days he was still alive and well. He went to Huangzhou to mourn his old classmate, crying,

“You and I were born at the exact same hour and place, but now you have passed away. Even if I were to die now, it would be a few days behind you.Why is this? If your spirit is still around, please tell me in my dream.”

That night, he dreamt of the dead Huangzhou magistrate, who told him, “You have been very cautious about not wasting money, which has enabled you to enjoy a long life.As for me, I overspent and used up my store of merit and fortune, thereby shortening my life span.”

The adage goes, “Demise follows the exhaustion of merit.”

Therefore, if we wish to live longer or to enjoy more happiness in our brief human existence, we must not squander our merit and fortune.

In the past, Buddhist masters placed great importance on safeguarding their merit and fortune.

They ate only enough to fill their stomachs and wore just enough clothing to keep their bodies warm. Other frivolous extras did not concern them at all.

One such example is the Venerable Hong Yi of Han China:

Once, Mr. Xia Mianzun, an eminent contemporary educator, went to visit the Venerable Hong Yi.

At lunch Xia could not bear to see that the Venerable had only pickles to eat with his rice.He asked, “Don’t you feel that these pickles are way too salty?”

Venerable Hong Yi replied, “Salty food has its own flavor: being salty.”

After lunch Xia saw that the Venerable had only a cup of hot water to drink.

Again he frowned and asked, “Don’t you have any tea? How can you drink this bland water everyday?”

Venerable Hong Yi smiled and said, “Although water is plain, it has its own flavor: being plain.”

Merit and fortune will last only when they are preserved well.

In fact, even if a person manages to amass unsurpassable possessions, he or she can enjoy only a tiny fraction of them.

俗话说得好:“纵有良田万顷,不过日食三斗;

As the saying goes, “Even owning a million hectares of fertile farmland, a person can only eat what the stomach can hold.

Even owning ten thousand spacious buildings, a person can only sleep on one bed.”

Therefore, living a modest life that sustains basic necessities is good enough. Do not rashly squander your hard-earned merit and fortune.

Even if you’re fully entitled, spend only a third of it and save the rest for future times.

Furthermore, if you can generate altruistic motivations and offer your merit and fortune to all sentient beings, before you know it, your good luck is multiplied and your happiness will know no end.
